🔧 Sportage - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the rear lamp assemblies. Replacing them usually takes a few minutes per side by opening the cargo-area access panel and swapping the bulb in the turn-signal socket.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool first—rear bulbs can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and avoid touching the new bulb’s glass (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ If a trim panel fights you, stop and look for hidden clips/screws to prevent breaking it.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic pry tool)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Switch all exterior lights OFF.
  • Open the liftgate for access to the rear cargo side panels.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the correct side

  • Turn the hazard lights ON and walk behind your Sportage to confirm which rear turn signal is out.
  • Turn the hazards back OFF.

Step 2: Access the rear lamp service cover

  • On the same side as the failed bulb, locate the small access door/cover in the cargo-area side trim.
  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) to gently pop the cover open. (A trim removal tool is a plastic lever that helps remove panels without scratching.)
  • If your cover has a fastener, remove it using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Look for the bulb socket going into the rear lamp housing (you’ll see wiring going to it).
  • Grip the socket and twist it counterclockwise about a quarter-turn, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle—don’t yank wires.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting on most turn bulbs).
  • Put on nitrile gloves, then push the new amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing, making sure the tabs line up.
  • Twist the socket clockwise until it locks.

Step 6: Refit the access cover

  • Reinstall any fastener using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Snap the access cover back into place by hand.

Step 7: If there is no access cover (alternate method)

  • If you don’t see an access door, you may need to remove the rear lamp assembly.
  • Open the liftgate and locate the lamp retaining fasteners near the lamp edge.
  • Remove fasteners using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then pull the lamp straight back to release the alignment pins.
  • Swap the turn signal bulb as in Steps 3–5, then reinstall the lamp and tighten fasteners Torque to 7–9 Nm (62–80 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn hazard lights ON and confirm the replaced side flashes normally.
  • Check both rear turn signals (left and right) for color match and brightness.
  • If the new bulb does not light, re-seat the bulb and socket; if still out, the bulb type may be different or there may be a fuse/wiring issue.
