🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement - Replacement

The rear turn signal bulb on your Beetle is accessed from inside the hatch area behind the tail lamp assembly. You’ll remove the inner trim access panel, release the tail lamp, then swap the bulb and reinstall everything carefully.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • Use a clean glove or tissue when handling the new bulb. Oils from your skin can shorten bulb life.
  • Support the tail lamp while it is loose so it does not scratch the paint.
  • If the bulb is stuck, do not force the socket. Twist gently and pull straight out.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Plastic trim tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hatch and remove any cargo near the rear lamp area.
  • Replace both rear turn signal bulbs if one has failed and the other is old.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hatch and access the rear lamp area

  • Open the rear hatch fully.
  • Use a plastic trim tool to carefully pop off the inner access cover behind the tail lamp on the side you are servicing.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining fastener

  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the tail lamp retaining screw.
  • Keep the screw in a safe place.

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Grip the tail lamp firmly and pull it straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle it gently while pulling with both hands.
  • Set the lamp on a clean towel so the lens does not get scratched.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket

  • Twist the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it out of the housing.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver only if the socket needs a gentle nudge.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb firmly into the socket.
  • Do not touch the glass.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing and twist it clockwise to lock it in place.
  • Slide the tail lamp back into position on the body.
  • Use the Torx T20 screwdriver to reinstall the retaining screw.
  • Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the access cover

  • Snap the inner access cover back into place by hand.
  • Make sure all clips are fully seated.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on the parking lights and activate the turn signal to confirm the new bulb works.
  • Check the opposite side too if you replaced both bulbs.
  • Verify the tail lamp is flush with the body and the hatch closes normally.
