🔧 Altima - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Altima’s rear turn signal bulbs are inside the tail lamp housing and are serviced from inside the trunk. This job is mostly “twist-and-pull” and does not require removing the whole tail light in most cases.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • 🔌 Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • 🧼 Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life); use clean gloves or a paper towel.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🔦 Open the trunk and have your flashlight ready.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves to keep the new bulb clean.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp bulb area from the trunk

  • Open the trunk and look behind the tail lamp area on the side you’re replacing.
  • Use a flashlight to find the small access cover or trunk liner flap near the tail lamp.
  • If there are plastic clips holding the liner, gently pry them with a plastic trim removal tool.
  • If a screw is present on the access cover, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 2: Identify the turn signal bulb socket

  • Look for the bulb sockets going into the tail lamp housing.
  • The turn signal socket is usually one of the larger twist-lock sockets.
  • If unsure, turn hazards on to confirm.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/8 to 1/4 turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp housing.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style on this setup).
  • If it feels stuck, gently wiggle while pulling—don’t crush the glass.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Using nitrile gloves, push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Make sure it sits straight (crooked seating can cause flickering or no operation).

Step 6: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
  • Rotate clockwise until it locks in place.

Step 7: Reinstall the trunk liner/access cover

  • Reposition the trunk liner.
  • Reinstall any clips by pressing them in by hand.
  • If removed, tighten the access cover screw with a Phillips #2 screwdriver (snug, do not overtighten).

Step 8: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same steps for the opposite rear turn signal.
  • Replacing in pairs keeps brightness even.

âś… After Repair

  • âś… Turn ignition ON and test left and right turn signals.
  • âś… Turn hazards ON and walk around the car to confirm both rear signals flash evenly.
  • âś… If the turn signal flashes fast, that usually means a bulb isn’t working—recheck bulb seating and socket lock.
