🔧 Explorer - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Explorer’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the outer tail lamp assemblies. Replacement usually means removing the tail lamp from the body, swapping the bulb, then reinstalling the lamp.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Don’t overtighten tail lamp screws; the housing is plastic.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4" drive)
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Small flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb - Match the bulb number printed on your old bulb (common numbers are 3156 or 3157) - Qty: 1 (or 2 to replace both sides)
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the liftgate to access the tail lamp screws.
- Set a towel down nearby to rest the tail lamp on (prevents scratches).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the tail lamp screws
- Open the liftgate.
- On the side you’re working on, locate the two screws on the inside edge of the tail lamp (visible with the liftgate open).
- Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet (and 6" extension if needed) to remove both screws.
- Keep screws in a cup so they don’t vanish.
Step 2: Pull the tail lamp assembly off
- Hold the tail lamp with both hands.
- Pull the tail lamp straight rearward (toward you). It’s held by alignment pins, so it may pop free suddenly.
- If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving—do not pry hard against painted metal.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Behind the tail lamp, find the bulb socket for the turn signal (one of the twist-lock sockets).
- Use your hand to rotate the socket about 1/4 turn counterclockwise, then pull it out.
- Use a small flashlight to confirm you’re on the correct socket.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style).
- While wearing nitrile gloves, push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Apply a very light smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not the bulb glass).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and rotate clockwise to lock.
- Line up the tail lamp alignment pins with the body holes.
- Press the tail lamp straight forward until it sits flush.
- Reinstall the two screws using the 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet; tighten snug only.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test the rear turn signal on that side.
- Test hazards (both sides) and confirm the blink rate is normal (fast blinking usually means a bulb isn’t working).
- If it doesn’t work, remove the bulb and re-seat it, then re-check the socket is fully twisted/locked.
