🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulb - Replacement

Your rear turn signal bulb is replaced by removing the tail lamp assembly, swapping the bulb, and reinstalling the lamp. This is a simple repair, but take care not to crack the lens or twist the bulb holder too hard.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlights and ignition off before starting.
  • Let the tail lamps cool if they were recently on.
  • Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers if it is halogen.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim tool or plastic pry tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Shift into Park and apply the parking brake.
  • Turn the exterior lights off.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the tail lamp fasteners.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs if one side has failed and the other is dim.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the tailgate

  • Lower the tailgate to reach the rear lamp mounting bolts.
  • Keep the tailgate fully supported while you work.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Use the 8mm socket, 1/4-inch ratchet, and short extension to remove the tail lamp bolts.
  • Gently pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • Do not twist the housing.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Twist the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the lamp housing.
  • If it is tight, use a trim tool or plastic pry tool carefully for light leverage.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket and install the new rear turn signal bulb.
  • Push the bulb in fully so it seats squarely.
  • Wear gloves for a clean grip.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the bulb socket back into the lamp housing and twist clockwise to lock it.
  • Align the tail lamp pins with the body openings and press the lamp into place.
  • Install the bolts with the 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet.
  • Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 lb-in).

Step 6: Test the repair

  • Turn the ignition on and activate the rear turn signal.
  • Check that the bulb flashes normally and that the lens is secure.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify both rear turn signals blink at the same rate.
  • Check the brake lights and parking lights while you are there.
  • If the bulb still does not work, inspect the socket for corrosion or heat damage.
