šŸ”§ Sierra 1500 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Sierra 1500, the rear turn signal bulb is accessed by removing the tail lamp assembly from the bedside. Once the lamp is out, you’ll twist out the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Let bulbs cool before touching them (they get very hot).
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • āš ļø Support the tail lamp so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T15 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn/stop bulb (7443) - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs for best match
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate to access the tail lamp screws.
  • If your rear turn signal is LED (no removable bulb), the bulb is not serviceable; you’ll replace the tail lamp assembly instead.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the tail lamp screws

  • Open the tailgate.
  • Use a Torx T15 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (near the tailgate). Torx is a star-shaped screw head

Step 2: Pull the tail lamp assembly out

  • Grip the tail lamp and pull straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving—do not pry hard on the painted surface.
  • Support the lamp with one hand so the wiring is not strained.

Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Find the socket for the turn/stop bulb on the back of the tail lamp (it’s one of the larger twist-lock sockets).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out. A bulb socket is the plastic holder the bulb locks into

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting on this style).
  • Push the new rear turn/stop bulb (7443) straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a very light smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal (rubber O-ring) if it looks dry.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Align the tail lamp locating pins, then press the assembly straight in until it sits flush.
  • Reinstall the two screws using the Torx T15 screwdriver.
  • Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs)

Step 6: If your turn signal is LED (no bulb)

  • After Step 2, inspect the back of the lamp: if there are no twist-lock bulb sockets for the turn signal, it’s an LED unit.
  • Replace the tail lamp assembly (the LED is built in).

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test: left turn, right turn, hazards, brake lights, and tail lights.
  • If the turn signal flashes fast, recheck that the bulb is fully seated and the correct type.
  • Make sure the tail lamp is fully flush and secure (no gaps).
