🔧 Civic - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll replace the rear turn signal bulb inside the tail light housing from inside the trunk. This is usually a quick job, and it fixes fast/slow blinking, a dead turn signal, or a “bulb out” warning.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Turn the lights OFF and remove the key.
• Open the trunk and clear out cargo so you can access the trunk side lining.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which side you’re replacing

• Turn the ignition to ON and test the turn signal (left or right), then turn ignition OFF again.
• Fast blinking usually means a bulb is out.

Step 2: Access the back of the tail light from the trunk

• Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop out the trunk liner clips near the tail light area.
• If there’s a small access cover, remove it by hand; otherwise gently pull the trunk side liner back.
• Use a small flashlight to locate the bulb sockets on the back of the tail light.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

• Put on nitrile gloves.
• Find the turn signal socket (it’s one of the twist-lock sockets on the back of the tail lamp).
• Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

• Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
• Push the new 7440 bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
• Do not force it; it should seat smoothly.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

• Reinsert the socket into the tail light and twist clockwise until it locks.
• Turn ignition ON and test that side’s turn signal and hazards.
• If it doesn’t work, remove the socket again and reseat the bulb firmly.

Step 6: Refit the trunk liner

• Reposition the trunk side liner.
• Reinstall the clips by pushing them in by hand; use the Phillips #2 screwdriver only if your clips use screws.
• If you removed any 10mm fasteners in your liner area, reinstall using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet snug (do not overtighten).

✅ After Repair

• Test left turn, right turn, and hazards.
• Verify the flash rate is normal on the dash indicator.
• If one side still flashes fast, check the other rear bulb and the front turn signal bulb on that same side.
