🔧 F-150 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your F-150, the rear turn signal is inside the tail lamp assembly. You’ll remove the tail lamp, twist out the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything so the signal flashes correctly again.
Assumption: Halogen bulb tail lamps (not factory LED) with two 8mm tail lamp screws.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let bulbs cool; hot bulbs can burn you.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses; plastic trim can snap or pop loose.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension (1/4" drive)

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear stop/turn bulb (3157) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park behind the truck with good lighting.
- Open the tailgate to access the tail lamp screws.
- Put on nitrile gloves to keep oil off the new bulb.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the tail lamp screws
- Open the tailgate.
- Use an 8mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the two screws on the inside edge of the tail lamp (they face inward toward the bed).
- Set the screws aside where they won’t get lost.
Step 2: Pull the tail lamp assembly straight back
- Grip the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool to gently help it release. Pull straight back to avoid breaking pins.
- Do not yank sideways—there are alignment pins that pop out of grommets.
Step 3: Remove the turn-signal bulb socket
- Find the socket for the stop/turn bulb (the dual-filament bulb socket).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand until it unlocks, then pull it out.
- If it’s tight, use your hand only; tools can crack the plastic socket.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new 3157 bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Keep fingers off the glass. If you touch it, wipe it with a clean, dry cloth.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Line up the tail lamp alignment pins with the body grommets, then press the lamp straight in until it sits flush.
- Reinstall the two screws using an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test the left and right turn signals.
- Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the truck to confirm both rear lamps flash evenly.
- Step on the brake pedal to confirm the same bulb also brightens for brake lights.
- If the new bulb doesn’t work, remove it and reseat it firmly in the socket, then re-check.
