🔧 1500 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove the rear tail lamp housing, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, and install a new bulb. This restores proper signaling and prevents fast-blink (hyperflash) when a bulb is burned out.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔥 If the lamps were on, let the housings cool before touching bulbs.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and avoid touching the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers.
  • 🔑 Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (3157) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Open the tailgate so you can access the tail lamp mounting screws on the inside edge of the lamp.
  • Confirm which side is out by turning on hazards (or have someone press the turn signal) and walking around the truck.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the tail lamp mounting screws

  • Open the tailgate.
  • At the inboard edge of the tail lamp, remove the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (some lamps use a Torx T25 screwdriver instead).
  • Set the screws aside where they won’t fall into the bumper area.

Step 2: Pull the tail lamp housing straight back

  • Grab the tail lamp housing with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving. Don’t pry on the painted bedside.
  • The lamp is held by alignment pins (ball-studs) that pop out with a firm, straight pull.

Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn-signal socket on the back of the housing (one of the twist-lock sockets).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it out.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm you’re on the correct socket before removing the bulb.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Install the new 3157 bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you have it, apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock by hand.
  • Before reinstalling the lamp, turn the ignition ON and test the turn signal/hazards.
  • If the bulb doesn’t light, turn ignition OFF and re-check bulb seating and socket lock.

Step 6: Reinstall the tail lamp housing

  • Line up the housing’s alignment pins with their holes, then push the housing straight forward until fully seated.
  • Reinstall the two mounting screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (or Torx T25 screwdriver as equipped).
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)

Step 7: Repeat on the other side (recommended)

  • Replace the bulb on the other tail lamp the same way. Bulbs typically age together, so this helps prevent the other side from failing soon after.

âś… After Repair

  • Test left turn, right turn, hazards, brake lights, and tail lights.
  • If you still get fast-blink, re-check the bulb type (must match) and that the socket is fully locked.
  • Make sure each tail lamp is fully seated and not loose.
