🔧 Escape - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Escape’s rear turn signal may be a replaceable bulb or an LED built into the tail lamp. If it’s a bulb, you’ll remove the tail lamp, twist out the socket, and swap the bulb. If it’s LED, the “bulb” isn’t serviceable—you replace the lamp assembly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Let the tail lamp cool if it was just used.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Support the tail lamp so it doesn’t scratch paint or drop.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4")
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Small flat screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber; match to old bulb) - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs if one is old.
  • Rear tail lamp assembly (if turn signal is LED/non-serviceable) - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease (small packet) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
  • Do a quick check: if the rear turn signal looks like a bright LED strip (no amber “bulb” visible), it may be LED/non-serviceable.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which side and what type (bulb vs LED)

  • Turn the hazard lights ON briefly, then OFF, and identify which rear side is out.
  • If the turn signal area is a sealed LED segment with no bulb socket access, follow the LED tail lamp assembly steps below.
  • If you can remove a socket and see a replaceable bulb, follow the Bulb-type steps below.

Step 2 (Bulb-type): Remove the rear tail lamp

  • Open the liftgate and locate the tail lamp fasteners along the inner edge of the lamp.
  • Use an 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4") to remove the fasteners.
  • Gently pull the tail lamp straight rearward. Use a trim removal tool (plastic) if it feels stuck. Pull straight back, not sideways.
  • Place a clean microfiber towel under/behind the lamp to protect paint.
  • Torque: Not specified by Ford for some lamp fasteners—tighten snug only, do not overtighten.

Step 3 (Bulb-type): Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn signal socket on the back of the lamp (it will twist-lock into the housing).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand. If tight, use a nitrile gloves grip or carefully assist with a small flat screwdriver on the socket tab.
  • Pull the socket out and inspect for moisture or corrosion.

Step 4 (Bulb-type): Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting on most wedge-base bulbs).
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber; match to old bulb) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).
  • If you touched the bulb glass, wipe it clean using the clean microfiber towel.

Step 5 (Bulb-type): Reinstall socket and tail lamp

  • Reinsert the socket and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Align the lamp’s locating pins and press the lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the fasteners using the 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4").
  • Torque: Not specified—tighten snug only.

Step 6 (LED tail lamp assembly): Replace the lamp (if no bulb is serviceable)

  • Open the liftgate and remove the tail lamp fasteners using an 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4").
  • Pull the lamp straight rearward. Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to help release alignment pins if needed.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector by releasing the lock tab (use a small flat screwdriver only if necessary).
  • Connect the new rear tail lamp assembly, then align and press it into place.
  • Reinstall fasteners using the 8mm socket and tighten snug.
  • Torque: Not specified—tighten snug only.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test: left signal, right signal, hazards, and brake lights.
  • Confirm the turn signal flashes at a normal rate (fast flashing usually means a bulb is still out or the wrong bulb type was installed).
  • Check that the tail lamp sits flush with the body and there are no gaps.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $5-$35 (bulb only) or $150-$450 (lamp assembly)

You Save: $50-$150 (bulb) or $50-$200 (lamp assembly) by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-1.0 hours.
