🔧 Optima - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Optima, the rear turn signal may be a traditional replaceable bulb, or it may be an LED built into the tail lamp (no separate “bulb”). We’ll confirm which style you have, then replace the bulb (or the lamp assembly if it’s LED).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours (bulb) / 0.8-1.2 hours (lamp assembly)
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
- ⚠️ Let the tail lamps cool before touching the socket or bulb.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you must lift the car for any reason, use jack stands (but this job is normally done from the trunk).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Phillips screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- Small flashlight
- Torque wrench (in-lb or Nm)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs is recommended
- Rear tail lamp assembly (if turn signal is LED/non-serviceable) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🧭 Confirm which type you have: turn on hazards and look at the rear turn signal area.
- If you see a distinct “bulb spot” and it flashes amber, it’s usually a replaceable bulb.
- If it’s a uniform LED strip/array and one section is out, it’s usually a non-serviceable LED (lamp replacement).
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can reach the rear lamp access area.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear lamp area from the trunk
- Use a small flashlight to find the rear corner behind the tail lamp.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to open/remove the trunk side access cover (if equipped).
Step 2A: Replace the bulb (serviceable bulb setup)
- Locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp housing.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand; if tight, use nitrile gloves for grip.
- Pull the socket straight out.
- Remove the bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket.
- Install the new amber bulb by pressing it straight in until fully seated.
- Don’t touch the bulb glass. If you do, wipe with alcohol and let dry.
- Reinstall the socket: insert it, then turn clockwise until it locks.
Step 2B: If it’s LED (no bulb): replace the outer tail lamp assembly
- Unplug the tail lamp electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling apart.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts inside the trunk.
- From outside, gently pull the lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins.
- Pull straight back to avoid breaking a pin.
- Transfer any bulbs/sockets from the old lamp to the new lamp (if applicable) by hand-twisting the sockets out/in.
- Install the new lamp by aligning the pins, then push it into place.
- Reinstall the nuts using a 10mm socket, then Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (in-lb or Nm).
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 3: Reassemble the trunk trim
- Reinstall the access cover/trim using the plastic trim removal tool as needed.
- If any fasteners were removed, reinstall them using a Phillips screwdriver.
Step 4: Function test
- Turn ignition ON and switch on hazards/turn signal.
- Verify the repaired side flashes normally and matches the other side brightness and speed.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check both rear turn signals and brake lights before driving.
- ✅ If the turn signal still “hyper-flashes,” the circuit may still see a fault (wrong bulb type, poor connection, or LED issue).
- ✅ If you replaced one bulb, consider replacing the other side soon (they age similarly).
