🔧 Terrain - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Terrain, the rear turn signal may be a replaceable bulb in the tail lamp, or it may be an LED that’s built into the lamp (no separate “bulb”). The steps depend on which style you have, so we’ll identify it first and then follow the correct path.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸 Turn the lights OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • 🔸 Let the tail lamp cool before touching it.
  • 🔸 Don’t touch a new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
  • 🔸 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Torx T15 screwdriver
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Plastic trim removal tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1 Replace both sides in pairs
  • Rear tail lamp assembly - Qty: 1 Only if turn signal is LED/non-serviceable

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate for access to the inboard edge of the tail lamp.
  • Have a flashlight ready so you can see the fasteners and bulb socket clearly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm whether your turn signal is a replaceable bulb or LED

  • Use a flashlight and look at the rear lamp while someone turns on the hazards (or use the turn signal).
  • If you can access a twist-lock socket behind the tail lamp, it’s a bulb style. If there’s no socket and the lamp is fully sealed, it’s LED and the lamp is typically replaced as an assembly.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate and locate the fasteners on the inboard edge of the tail lamp.
  • Remove fasteners using either a Torx T15 screwdriver/Torx T20 screwdriver or a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet (your Terrain may use either style).
  • Set the fasteners aside where they won’t roll away.

Step 3: Release the tail lamp from the body

  • Pull the tail lamp straight rearward using steady pressure.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it release. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps prevent paint damage.)
  • Don’t pry on painted edges.

Step 4A: If equipped with a bulb socket, replace the turn signal bulb

  • Locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and remove it from the lamp.
  • Wear nitrile gloves, remove the old bulb, and install the new bulb fully seated.
  • Reinstall the socket and twist clockwise until it locks.

Step 4B: If equipped with LED (no bulb), replace the tail lamp assembly

  • Disconnect the tail lamp electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling apart by hand.
  • Transfer any required parts (like clips) to the new lamp if needed.
  • Install the replacement tail lamp assembly and reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 5: Reinstall the tail lamp and fasteners

  • Align the tail lamp locating pins and press the lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the fasteners using a Torx T15 screwdriver/Torx T20 screwdriver or 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)

âś… After Repair

  • Test left and right turn signals and hazards.
  • Confirm the lamp is fully seated and even with the body panels.
  • If you replaced a bulb and it still doesn’t work, swap sides to confirm bulb vs wiring/socket issue.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $5-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $40-$160 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.

Quick check so I can lock this down perfectly (pick up to two):

  • 🔸 When the turn signal flashes, does the rear lamp look like individual LED dots/strips, or a single bright “bulb” glow?
  • 🔸 Can you upload a photo of the inboard edge of the tail lamp with the liftgate open (showing the fasteners)?
