šŸ”§ Palisade - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Palisade, the rear turn signal may be a replaceable bulb in the tail lamp, or it may be an LED that’s built into the lamp (no separate bulb). The steps below walk you through checking which style you have and replacing it the clean, no-damage way.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the lights OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before starting.
  • āš ļø Let the bulbs cool before touching (they get hot).
  • āš ļø Do not touch a new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • āš ļø Support the tail lamp with your hand when it comes loose so it doesn’t scratch paint.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4")
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1 (or Qty: 2 if replacing both sides)
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the hazard lights on briefly to confirm which rear lamp is the turn signal, then turn them back off.
  • Open the rear liftgate for easiest access to the tail lamp fasteners.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm you have a replaceable bulb (not an LED-only lamp)

  • Turn the hazards on and watch the rear lamp to identify the turn signal section.
  • If the turn signal area is made of many tiny ā€œdotsā€ and there’s no bulb socket access, it may be LED (no bulb). In that case, the fix is usually replacing the lamp assembly.
  • Turn hazards back off.

Step 2: Access the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate.
  • At the inboard edge of the tail lamp (near the liftgate opening), use a plastic trim removal tool to pop off the small access cover(s), if equipped.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the tail lamp retaining nuts/bolts behind the cover area.

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4") to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
  • Place one hand on the lamp and gently pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins/clips.
  • Tip: Wiggle gently; don’t pry against paint.

Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • On the back of the tail lamp, find the socket for the turn signal section you identified.
  • With nitrile gloves on, twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (no tools).
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry (helps keep moisture out).

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Align the lamp’s guide pins with the body holes and push the lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the retaining nuts using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4").
  • Torque to 7-9 Nm (62-80 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall the access cover(s) by pressing them back in by hand.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn hazards on and confirm the repaired side flashes normally and matches brightness side-to-side.
  • If it ā€œhyper-flashesā€ (blinks fast), recheck that the bulb is the correct type and fully seated.
  • Check that the tail lamp sits flush and doesn’t wobble.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $5-$25 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$175 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.

Quick check (so I keep this 100% accurate):

  • Which rear area is your turn signal in: the outer tail lamp on the body, or the lamp on the liftgate?
  • When it flashes, does it look like a single bulb (one bright point) or many tiny LEDs?
