🔧 Insight - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Insight, the rear turn signal bulb is accessed from inside the trunk behind the tail lamp area (most are serviced without removing the entire lamp). You’ll remove an access cover, twist out the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and test the signal.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car fully OFF and keep the key fob away from the car while working.
  • ⚠️ Let the lamps cool before touching them (bulbs get hot).
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass part of an incandescent bulb with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver #2

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (match the bulb number from your old bulb) - Qty: 1
  • Rear turn signal bulb (match the bulb number from your old bulb) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs (recommended)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and make sure the car is OFF.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can see the trunk side trim near the tail lamp.
  • If you can’t find an access door behind the tail lamp, stop and tell me—your Insight may require tail lamp removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the correct side and bulb

  • Turn the hazard lights ON briefly, then turn them OFF (use the hazard button).
  • Walk behind your Insight and confirm which rear turn signal is out (left or right).
  • If both are fast-blinking, check both bulbs.

Step 2: Access the rear of the tail lamp from the trunk

  • Open the trunk.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the trim area directly behind the outer tail lamp on the side you’re servicing.
  • If there’s a small access cover/door, remove it using a trim clip removal tool (or remove any clips/screws holding the liner with a Phillips screwdriver #2).
  • Trim clips pop out straight—don’t pry hard.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Identify the turn signal socket on the back of the tail lamp (it will be a twist-lock socket).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise to unlock it (use nitrile gloves for grip).
  • Pull the socket straight out of the housing.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (use nitrile gloves).
  • Match the bulb number printed on the old bulb base to your replacement bulb.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Don’t force it—recheck alignment.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and reassemble trim

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
  • Rotate clockwise until it locks in place by hand.
  • Reinstall the access cover and any clips/screws you removed using the trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver #2.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the hazards ON and verify the repaired side flashes normally.
  • Test left and right turn signals with the stalk.
  • If it still doesn’t work, swap the left/right bulbs (if identical) to confirm the bulb is good, then we’ll check the socket and wiring.

Quick question (so I can make this 100% accurate): When you open the trunk on your Insight, do you see a small access door/cover behind the tail lamp area on the side you’re replacing, or is it fully covered by trunk liner?
