🔧 Altima - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Altima, the rear turn signal is inside the outer tail lamp on the rear quarter panel. Most versions use a replaceable twist-lock bulb socket, but some tail lamps are LED (no serviceable bulb) and require replacing the lamp assembly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
  • 🔸 Let the tail lamp cool if it was just on.
  • 🔸 Do not touch the glass part of an incandescent bulb with bare fingers.
  • 🔸 Do not force trim clips; pry gently to avoid breaking them.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension
  • Trim removal tool
  • Torque wrench (in-lb)
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (match your existing bulb type) - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
  • Rear tail lamp assembly - Qty: 1 If your turn signal is LED

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🔸 Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🔸 Open the trunk and remove any cargo near the side you’re working on.
  • 🔸 Decide which side: driver side = left, passenger side = right.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm whether you have a bulb or LED lamp

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the tail lamp from inside the trunk area.
  • If you see a round twist-lock socket with wires going to it, you have a replaceable bulb.
  • If there is no twist-lock socket and the back of the lamp looks sealed with a large connector only, it’s LED and the lamp is replaced as an assembly.

Step 2: Remove the trunk side trim access panel

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a trim removal tool to gently pop out the plastic push clips holding the trunk side liner near the tail lamp.
  • Peel the liner back just enough to reach the lamp mounting nuts and/or bulb socket. Go slow to avoid tearing the liner.

Step 3 (Bulb-type lamp): Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp.
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.

Step 4 (Bulb-type lamp): Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not the bulb glass) to help keep moisture out.

Step 5 (Bulb-type lamp): Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp and rotate clockwise until it locks.
  • Turn the ignition ON and test the rear turn signal (and hazards) before reassembling the trim.
  • If it doesn’t work, remove the socket and flip the bulb orientation (some bulbs can be installed slightly off). Also re-check it’s fully seated.

Step 6 (LED lamp only): Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Disconnect the lamp wiring connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling the connector apart by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp mounting nuts inside the trunk.
  • Support the lamp with your other hand so it doesn’t fall or scratch paint.
  • Pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.

Step 7 (LED lamp only): Install the new tail lamp

  • Line up the alignment pins and press the lamp into place.
  • Reinstall the nuts using a 10mm socket.
  • Use a torque wrench (in-lb) and 10mm socket: Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lb).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Test turn signal and hazards.

Step 8: Reinstall the trunk trim

  • Reposition the trunk liner.
  • Reinstall any push clips by pressing them back in by hand.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔸 Confirm normal flash rate (fast flashing usually means a bulb/circuit issue).
  • 🔸 Check both turn signals and hazard lights.
  • 🔸 Verify the lamp is seated evenly and not loose.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (bulb) / $350-$750 (LED lamp assembly installed)

DIY Cost: $5-$25 (bulb) / $180-$550 (LED lamp assembly)

You Save: $60-$200 (bulb) / $150-$300 (lamp assembly) by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
