🔧 Tiguan - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Tiguan, the rear turn signal is in the outer tail lamp (the one on the body, not the liftgate). Most trims use a replaceable amber bulb, but some have an LED turn signal built into the lamp (no bulb to replace), so I’m including both paths.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the tail lamp cool if the lights were on (bulbs get hot).
- ⚠️ Don’t touch a new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp while unplugging it so it doesn’t fall and crack.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 3" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Plastic trim removal tool set
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (amber, 21W) - Qty: 1 (replace in pairs recommended)
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 (optional)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access to the rear cargo side area.
- If your Tiguan has an LED rear turn signal, there is no bulb to replace (you replace the tail lamp assembly instead).
- A “trim removal tool” is a plastic pry tool that helps pop covers off without scratching.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which style you have (bulb vs LED)
- Turn on the hazards briefly and look at the rear turn signal.
- If you see a single bright “on/off” light source, it’s usually a bulb type.
- If you see a crisp LED segment/strip inside the lamp (no separate “bulb-looking” area), it’s likely LED (no bulb).
- Turn hazards OFF before continuing.
Step 2: Remove the access cover in the cargo area
- Open the rear cargo area on the side of the failed turn signal.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop off the small access cover behind the tail lamp.
- Use a flashlight to locate the tail lamp retaining nut(s) behind the panel.
Step 3: Remove the outer tail lamp from the body
- Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the retaining nut.
- Hold the tail lamp with your other hand as the nut comes off.
- Carefully pull the tail lamp straight rearward (it has a locating pin).
- Unplug the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling it off by hand.
Step 4 (Bulb-type lamp): Replace the rear turn signal bulb
- On the back of the tail lamp, remove the bulb carrier by twisting it counterclockwise by hand.
- Find the turn signal bulb (usually the amber bulb in the carrier).
- Remove the bulb by twisting it slightly and pulling it out (bayonet style).
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, 21W) without touching the glass (use nitrile gloves).
- Tip: A tiny dab of dielectric grease helps prevent corrosion.
- Reinstall the bulb carrier and twist clockwise until it locks.
Step 4 (LED-type lamp): What to do instead
- If there is no removable bulb carrier and the turn signal is an LED module, the “bulb” is not serviceable.
- You’ll replace the outer tail lamp assembly (left or right) as a unit.
- Reinstallation is the same as Steps 6–8 after swapping the assembly.
Step 5: Function test before reinstalling the lamp
- Reconnect the electrical connector by hand until it clicks.
- Turn the hazards ON and confirm the rear turn signal works.
- Turn hazards OFF again.
Step 6: Reinstall the tail lamp on the body
- Align the locating pin and press the tail lamp straight into place.
- Install the retaining nut using a 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet.
- Torque to 4 Nm (35 in-lbs).
- Tip: Snug only—over-tightening can crack the lamp.
Step 7: Reinstall the access cover
- Snap the access cover back in using your hands.
Step 8: Final light check
- Turn hazards ON and check both rear turn signals.
- Verify brake lights and reverse lights still work (quick check).
âś… After Repair
- Confirm the turn signal flashes at a normal speed on the dash (fast-flash usually means a bulb is still out).
- If it’s still not working, the next checks are the bulb orientation, connector seating, and fuse/BCM fault codes.
- Tip: Replace left and right bulbs together for even brightness.
