🔧 C-HR - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your C-HR, the rear turn signal is inside the rear combination (tail) lamp assembly. To replace the bulb, you typically remove the tail lamp from the body, twist the bulb socket out, and swap the bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the ignition OFF and make sure all exterior lights are OFF before starting.
- 🧤 Wear gloves—bulbs can be hot and can break if squeezed.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- 3" extension (1/4" drive)
- Trim removal tool (plastic)

- Torque wrench (inch-pound) (specialty)

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your C-HR on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear hatch and remove any cargo that blocks access to the tail lamp area.
- Tip: Do one side at a time.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which rear lamp section is out
- Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the rear.
- Confirm the rear turn signal section that’s not flashing (left or right).
- Turn hazards OFF and switch ignition OFF.
Step 2: Remove the rear combination lamp fasteners
- At the inside edge of the tail lamp (hatch open), use a trim removal tool (plastic) to pop off the small access cover(s) if equipped.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension (1/4" drive), and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts/bolts.
- Set the fasteners aside where they won’t fall into the trim.
Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (away from the body) to release the locating pins/clips.
- If it feels stuck, use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently help it break free—do not pry hard on the painted body.
- Tip: Pull straight back, not outward.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp (the socket that lines up with the amber turn signal section).
- Rotate the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
- If it’s tight, use a nitrile gloves grip and a flashlight to see the lock tabs.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (no twisting on most wedge-base bulbs).
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Use the flashlight to read the bulb number on the old bulb and match it when buying the replacement.
- If the bulb is glass, handle it with nitrile gloves.
Step 6: Quick function test before reassembly
- Reinsert the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
- Turn the hazards ON and confirm the new bulb flashes normally.
- Turn hazards OFF.
Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly
- Line up the locating pins/clips with the body holes and push the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the retaining nuts/bolts using a 10mm socket, 3" extension (1/4" drive), and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (inch-pound) (specialty).
- Reinstall any access covers using the trim removal tool (plastic) if needed.
âś… After Repair
- Turn on hazards and confirm both rear turn signals flash at a normal speed.
- Check the brake lights and tail lights while you’re there (easy to verify now).
- If the turn signal still “hyper-flashes” quickly, double-check the bulb is fully seated and the correct type.
