šŸ”§ Cherokee - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Cherokee’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the tail lamp housing. Replacing it typically means loosening the tail lamp from inside the liftgate area, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping the bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • āš ļø Let the tail lamp cool before touching it if it was recently on.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • āš ļø Support the tail lamp with one hand so it doesn’t drop or scratch paint.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for a simple bulb swap.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1
  • Tail lamp assembly - Qty: 1 Only if your turn signal is LED

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate and leave it fully supported.
  • Have a soft towel ready to set the tail lamp on after it’s loosened.
  • Trim tool = plastic pry tool for panels.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the small interior access cover/trim panel near the tail lamp area.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully pry the access cover open.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts

  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp nuts behind the access opening.
  • Keep the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the body cavity.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp outward

  • With one hand supporting the lamp, pull the tail lamp straight rearward (away from the body).
  • If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it—don’t pry against painted surfaces.
  • Set the lamp on a towel to prevent scratches.

Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Look at the back of the tail lamp and find the turn signal socket (the bulb holder that twists into the housing).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • If it’s tight, use a nitrile glove for grip—avoid using pliers.

Step 5: Replace the bulb (non-LED turn signal)

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb by pushing it straight into the socket.
  • If it’s a glass bulb, don’t touch glass.

Step 6: If your Cherokee has LED rear turn signals

  • If there is no twist-out bulb socket and the turn signal is part of an LED board, you typically replace the tail lamp assembly.
  • Use a small flathead screwdriver to release any wiring connector lock tab, then unplug the connector.
  • Transfer any removable bulbs/sockets (if equipped) from the old housing to the new one by hand.

Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp

  • Reinsert the bulb socket and twist clockwise until fully seated.
  • Align the tail lamp locating pins with the body grommets, then push the lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the nuts using a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
  • Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back in by hand.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test the rear turn signals, hazards, and brake lights.
  • Walk around the vehicle and confirm the repaired side matches the other side in brightness and flash speed.
  • If the turn signal flashes fast, re-check that the bulb is fully seated and the correct type for your Cherokee.
