🔧 QX60 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assembly, swap the rear turn signal bulb, then reinstall everything so the lamp seals properly and doesn’t rattle. This is a straightforward job, but the key is pulling the lamp straight back so you don’t break the alignment pins.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: your rear turn signal uses a 7440/7440A-style amber bulb.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching them (they get very hot).
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Pull the tail lamp straight back—prying sideways can crack the lens or break clips.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4")
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440/7440A type) - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the rear liftgate.
  • Keep a small tray ready for nuts so nothing drops into the body panel.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for a simple bulb swap.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate and locate the small interior access cover behind the tail lamp area.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop the access cover open. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove panels without scratching.)
  • Use a flashlight to find the tail lamp retaining nuts.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4") to remove the two nuts holding the tail lamp.
  • Set the nuts aside somewhere safe.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly off

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Grip the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you), not outward to the side.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while pulling straight back to release the alignment pins.
  • Tip: Slow, steady force prevents broken clips.

Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • On the back of the lamp, find the turn signal socket (usually the amber/turn position).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440/7440A type) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not the bulb glass) to help keep moisture out.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Align the lamp’s guide pins with the body holes, then push the lamp straight forward until it sits flush.
  • Reinstall the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
  • Snap the interior access cover back in using your hands (or a plastic trim removal tool if needed).

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test the rear turn signal and hazards.
  • Confirm the lamp housing sits flush and doesn’t move when you lightly push it.
  • If the turn signal “hyper-flashes” (blinks fast), recheck bulb fitment and the socket connection.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $5-$25 (parts only)

You Save: $35-$135 by doing it yourself!
