How to Replace Rear Turn Signal Bulb on a 2016 Audi A6 (Tail Light Removal)
Step-by-step trunk access guide with tools, parts, safety tips, and tail lamp torque specs

🔧 A6 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove the rear lamp access (from inside the trunk), take the tail lamp out, then replace the rear turn signal bulb. This is usually a quick job, but the tail lamp must be handled carefully to avoid cracking it or damaging the wiring.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working on lighting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool—halogen bulbs can burn you.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and avoid touching the new bulb’s glass (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp as you remove it so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Trim removal tool
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Torque wrench (2–20 Nm range)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight

- Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs recommended
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can access the side trim.
- No battery disconnect is required for a basic bulb swap.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open trunk and access the tail lamp fasteners
- Use a flashlight to locate the access area behind the tail lamp on the trunk side trim.
- Use a trim removal tool to carefully release the trim cover/liner clips near the tail lamp area.
- Work slowly—Audi trim clips can snap.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts
- Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" extension to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
- If your A6 uses a larger nut, use a 10mm socket instead.
- Set the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trunk cavity.
Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- Support the lamp with one hand, then gently pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently—do not pry against painted surfaces.
Step 4: Disconnect the electrical connector
- Locate the main connector on the back of the tail lamp.
- Press the connector tab and pull the connector off by hand. If needed, use a trim removal tool to help depress the tab gently.
Step 5: Remove the bulb carrier (or access cap)
- On many A6 tail lamps, the bulbs are on a removable carrier board (a plastic panel that holds the bulbs).
- Release the carrier by hand (clips) or with an 8mm socket if small fasteners are present.
- Take a quick photo before removing anything.
Step 6: Replace the rear turn signal bulb
- Identify the turn signal bulb position (typically the amber/turn location on the outer tail lamp).
- Remove the bulb by turning it counterclockwise (twist-lock) and pulling it out, or pulling it straight out if it’s a wedge-style.
- Install the new bulb fully seated. Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area only (not on the bulb glass).
- Don’t touch bulb glass with bare fingers.
Step 7: Reassemble and torque fasteners
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Reinstall the bulb carrier/access cap and secure it.
- Reinstall the tail lamp, aligning the locating pins carefully.
- Install the retaining nuts using an 8mm socket or 10mm socket.
- Tighten evenly with a torque wrench: Torque to 4 Nm (35 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall trunk trim
- Reinstall the trunk side trim/cover and press clips back in by hand.
- Use a trim removal tool to align clips if needed, then press until seated.
âś… After Repair
- Turn ignition ON and test the rear turn signal and hazards.
- Verify the tail lamp is flush with the body and the trunk closes without rubbing.
- If you get a bulb-out warning, recheck the connector seating and bulb type/fitment.
- Replace left and right bulbs together for even brightness.
