📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear hatch and remove any cargo that blocks the tail lamp area.
- Apply painter’s tape along the body edge next to the tail lamp to protect the paint.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the hatch and locate the tail lamp access cover on the inside trim near the lamp.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop off the access cover.
- If a clip is stubborn, use a small flat-blade screwdriver carefully at the edge. Go slow to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp nuts
- Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 3" extension to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
- Place the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trim.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) during reinstallation (snug, not tight).
Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- With the nuts removed, hold the tail lamp with both hands.
- Pull the tail lamp straight rearward (toward you) to release it from the locating pins.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently—do not pry against the painted body.
Step 4: Disconnect the electrical connector
- Locate the tail lamp wiring connector on the back of the lamp.
- Press the locking tab and pull the connector off by hand.
- Use a flashlight to see the lock clearly.
Step 5: Remove the bulb carrier (bulb holder)
- The bulb carrier is the plastic plate on the back of the tail lamp that holds the bulbs.
- Release the carrier locks (tabs) by hand; if needed, use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently on the tabs.
- Lift/pull the carrier out of the tail lamp.
Step 6: Replace the rear turn signal bulb
- Identify the turn signal bulb position (usually the amber bulb socket location in the carrier).
- Wear nitrile gloves, then remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket.
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb fully into the socket (push straight in until seated).
Step 7: Test before reassembly
- Reconnect the tail lamp electrical connector by hand.
- Turn the ignition ON and switch the turn signal on that side.
- Confirm proper operation and normal flash speed (fast flashing can mean a bulb isn’t seated).
Step 8: Reinstall the bulb carrier and tail lamp
- Disconnect the connector again (optional but makes installation easier).
- Reinstall the bulb carrier into the tail lamp until the tabs click into place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it locks.
- Align the tail lamp locating pins and push the lamp straight into position.
- Install the nuts using the 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 9: Refit the trim access cover
- Press the access cover back into place by hand.
- Remove the painter’s tape from the body.
✅ After Repair
- Test left and right rear turn signals, hazards, brake lights, and tail lights.
- Check that the tail lamp sits flush with the body and there are no gaps.
- If you see moisture inside the lamp later, replace the tail lamp seal/gasket.
