šŸ”§ Grand Cherokee - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Grand Cherokee may have either a replaceable rear turn-signal bulb or an LED rear lamp where the ā€œbulbā€ isn’t serviceable. The first step is confirming which rear lamp type you have, then the rest is straightforward: remove the tail lamp, swap the bulb (or lamp), and test.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • āš ļø Let the exhaust cool before working near the rear bumper area.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch a new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • āš ļø Support the tail lamp as you pull it out; the locating pin can release suddenly.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)
  • Torque wrench (Nm) (specialty)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440 type) - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs for matching color.
  • Rear outer tail lamp assembly (LED type, if equipped) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
  • If you’re unsure whether you have LED or bulbs: once the lamp is loosened, check the back for a twist-out bulb socket. If there’s no removable socket and the lamp is sealed, it’s LED.
  • ā€œTrim toolā€ = plastic pry tool to avoid scratches.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp nuts

  • Open the liftgate.
  • On the side you’re working on, use the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently pop open/remove the small interior access cover behind the tail lamp area.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts

  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the two tail lamp nuts.
  • Set the nuts aside where they won’t fall into the trim.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp straight outward

  • Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight back (rearward) to release the locating pin.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while pulling straight out—do not pry against painted body panels with metal tools.

Step 4A: If equipped with a replaceable bulb socket (bulb-style lamps)

  • Find the turn-signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and remove it from the housing.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (use nitrile gloves).
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440 type) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Reinstall the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.

Step 4B: If equipped with sealed LED tail lamps (no bulb socket)

  • If there is no twist-out socket and the lamp is sealed, the rear turn signal is LED and not serviced as a bulb.
  • Transfer any connectors as needed, then replace the entire rear outer tail lamp assembly (LED type, if equipped).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until the lock clicks.

Step 5: Reinstall the tail lamp

  • Line up the locating pin and lamp studs with the body.
  • Press the lamp straight inward until it seats flush.
  • Install the two nuts using the 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Use a torque wrench (Nm) (specialty) and 10mm socket: Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall the interior access cover using the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty).

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test: rear turn signal, hazards, and brake lights.
  • Verify the lamp sits flush and doesn’t wobble.
  • If you replaced only one bulb and the color/blink speed looks different, replace the bulb on the other side too.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹800-₹2,500 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹200-₹2,000 (parts only, depends on bulb vs LED lamp)

You Save: ₹600-₹1,500 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
