🔧 Ridgeline - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Ridgeline’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the tail lamp assembly. The job is mainly gaining access through the bed-side service cover, removing the tail lamp, then swapping the bulb in the socket.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔸 Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool before touching them (they get hot).
  • 🔸 Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • 🔸 Support the tail lamp as you pull it out so you don’t scratch paint or crack the lens.
  • 🔸 Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb swap.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Small flat trim pick

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the bed-side service covers.
  • Decide which side you’re replacing: left (driver) or right (passenger). Replacing in pairs is smart.
  • Have your new bulb ready, and compare it to the old one (same base and size).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners

  • Go to the bed side panel behind the tail lamp you’re working on.
  • Use the trim panel removal tool (a plastic pry tool used to pop panels without damage) to remove the bed-side service cover.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Use the 8mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
  • Support the lamp with your free hand as the last nut comes off.
  • Pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins (don’t pry on the painted body edge).

Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (the socket for the amber turn signal).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves and pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a very light film of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry (don’t pack the connector).

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Reinstall the socket into the tail lamp and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Align the tail lamp locating pins, then press the tail lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the retaining nuts using the 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Torque to 7.2 Nm (5.3 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Reinstall the bed-side service cover

  • Snap the cover back in place using hand pressure.
  • If your cover uses screws on your Ridgeline, reinstall them using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

âś… After Repair

  • Test the turn signal on that side, then test the hazards.
  • Confirm the flash rate is normal (fast flashing usually means a bulb issue).
  • Check that the tail lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $5-$25 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$155 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
