🔧 Accord - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove the rear tail light assembly, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, and install a new bulb. This is straightforward, but the key is not cracking the tail light or dropping the socket into the trunk cavity.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the exhaust cool if you just drove.
  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before working on bulbs.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the tail light as you pull it out to avoid cracking it.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove anything that blocks access to the tail light area.
  • If you’re doing both sides, replace bulbs one side at a time so you can use the other side as a reference.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail light fasteners

  • Open the trunk and locate the carpet/trim panel behind the tail light.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop out the trim clips (a trim clip is a plastic push-fastener that holds panels in place).
  • Pull the trunk liner back enough to see the tail light mounting nuts.

Step 2: Remove the tail light mounting nuts

  • Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" extension to remove the tail light nuts.
  • Put the nuts in a small pile or tray so they don’t get lost.

Step 3: Remove the tail light assembly

  • From outside the car, gently pull the tail light straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, use the plastic trim removal tool to carefully help it release—do not pry on the painted body.
  • Wiggle gently; don’t force it.

Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Identify the turn signal socket on the back of the tail light (the one that corresponds to the amber/blinking section).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it out by hand.
  • If it’s tight, use needle-nose pliers carefully on the socket tabs (don’t crush the plastic).

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves and pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail light

  • Reinstall the socket into the tail light and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Line up the tail light locating pins and push the tail light straight into place.
  • Install the mounting nuts using the 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Tighten snug by hand—these studs can break if over-tightened (no torque spec typically provided for this fastener).
  • Reposition the trunk liner and reinstall the clips using the plastic trim removal tool.

Step 7: Verify operation

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test the rear turn signal.
  • Walk behind the car and confirm it blinks at a normal speed on that side.

âś… After Repair

  • Test left and right turn signals and the hazard lights.
  • If it “hyper-flashes” (blinks fast), recheck bulb seating and socket lock.
  • Make sure the trunk liner is secured so it won’t snag cargo.
