🔧 Accord - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Accord’s rear turn signal bulb sits in the tail light housing and is accessed from inside the trunk. You’ll remove a small trunk liner access cover (or a few clips), twist the bulb socket out, and swap in a new bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • 🧊 Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot right after use.
  • 🧼 Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440A amber) - Qty: 1
  • Trunk liner push clips - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can see the trunk side liners clearly.
  • Keep clips in a cup so none get lost.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the rear of the tail light

  • Use a flashlight to locate the trunk liner panel behind the tail light on the side you’re repairing.
  • If there’s a small access door, open it by gently prying with a small flathead screwdriver.
  • If the liner is held by push-clips, use a trim clip removal tool to pop the clips out (a trim clip tool is a forked plastic/metal tool that lifts clips without tearing fabric).

Step 2: Identify the turn signal bulb socket

  • Look for the bulb socket going into the tail light housing; it will have a wiring connector attached.
  • Use the flashlight to confirm you’re on the turn signal socket (not brake or reverse).

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/8 to 1/4 turn by hand.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the tail light housing.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle gently—don’t force it.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb (7440A amber) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.

Step 5: Test the turn signal before reassembly

  • Reinsert the socket into the tail light and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Turn the ignition to ON and activate the turn signal for that side.
  • Confirm normal flash speed and that the bulb lights brightly.

Step 6: Reinstall the trunk liner

  • Reposition the liner and reinstall the clips using your hands; use a Phillips #2 screwdriver only if your liner has a screw fastener.
  • Make sure the liner sits flat so it won’t rattle.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify both turn signals and hazard lights work.
  • Make sure the socket is locked; a loose socket can let water into the tail light.
  • If the turn signal flashes fast, the bulb may be wrong type or not seated.
