🔧 Tucson - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll access the rear lamp from inside the cargo area, remove the rear lamp assembly, then swap the turn-signal bulb in its twist-lock socket. This is a simple job, but the lamp studs are easy to crack if you overtighten them.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before working on exterior lights.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be very hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch a new glass bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the lamp as you pull it out so you don’t scratch paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1 (or Qty: 2 if replacing both sides)
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 (optional)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the rear liftgate.
  • Turn the lights OFF and make sure the turn signal stalk is centered.
  • If you’re unsure which bulb to buy, pull the old bulb first and match the bulb number printed on its base.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the access area behind the rear lamp

  • Open the liftgate and go to the side you’re replacing.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to open/remove the small interior access cover behind the rear lamp (if equipped).

Step 2: Remove the rear lamp retaining nuts

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the lamp retaining nuts.
  • Put the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the body cavity.

Step 3: Pull the rear lamp assembly out

  • Hold the lamp with both hands and pull straight rearward to release the locating pin/clips.
  • Wiggle gently; don’t pry on paint.

Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • On the back of the lamp, find the turn-signal socket (the socket that lines up with the amber/turn section of the lens).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for grip (don’t use pliers unless absolutely necessary).

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket (either pull straight out or twist-and-pull depending on bulb base).
  • Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
  • If using it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks by hand.
  • Line up the lamp’s locating pin/clips and press the lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the retaining nuts using the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet: Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall the interior access cover using the plastic trim removal tool (and Phillips screwdriver if your cover uses a screw).

âś… After Repair

  • Turn ignition ON and test the rear turn signal and hazards on that side.
  • Walk behind your Tucson and confirm the flash rate is normal (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t seated or is the wrong type).
  • Make sure the lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle.
