🔧 Altima - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Altima’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the tail lamp assembly. To replace it, you’ll access the back of the tail lamp from inside the trunk, remove the bulb socket, and install a new bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if they were just used (they get hot).
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the tail lamp when loosening nuts so it doesn’t drop or scratch paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1 (or Qty: 2 if replacing both sides)
  • Trunk trim push clips (optional) - Qty: 2-6 (only if any break)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the trunk.
  • Have a flashlight ready so you can see behind the trunk liner.
  • Tip: Replace both sides for matching brightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Expose the back of the tail lamp

  • Use a flashlight to locate the trunk-side carpet/liner behind the tail lamp.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any plastic push clips holding the liner.
  • Pull the liner back enough to reach the tail lamp sockets and mounting nuts.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp mounting nuts

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
  • Set the nuts aside where they won’t get lost.
  • Tip: Turn slowly—don’t drop nuts into the trunk.

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • From outside the car, hold the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently—don’t pry against the paint.

Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (the socket that aligns with the amber turn signal lens area).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a pull-out style on most Altima rear turn signals).
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean, dry paper towel.

Step 6: Reinstall socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket into the tail lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Guide the tail lamp back into place, lining up the locating pins.
  • Use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension to reinstall the nuts.
  • Tighten the nuts snugly (do not overtighten—tail lamp studs can crack the housing).

Step 7: Reinstall trunk liner

  • Reposition the trunk liner.
  • Press the clips back in by hand (use the trim clip removal tool to help align them if needed).

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test the rear turn signal and hazard lights.
  • Verify the bulb flashes at a normal speed (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated).
  • Check that the tail lamp sits flush and doesn’t wobble.
