📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🧰 Open the liftgate and clear cargo so you can reach the side access panel.
- 🔦 Have a flashlight ready; the access area is dark.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Get access to the tail lamp area
- Open the liftgate.
- Use a flashlight to locate the rear lamp access cover on the inside trim (left or right side of cargo area).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pry off the access cover.
Step 2: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Look behind the tail lamp and find the turn signal bulb socket (the plastic piece that holds the bulb and twists into the lamp).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock, then pull it straight out.
- If it’s tight, use a clean rag for grip; do not yank the wiring.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) into the socket.
- Wear nitrile gloves; if you touch the bulb glass, wipe it with a clean rag.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and rotate clockwise to lock.
- Turn the ignition to ON and test the turn signal and hazards.
- Tip: Fast blinking usually means wrong bulb.
Step 5: If there is no access panel (alternate method)
- Open the liftgate and locate the tail lamp retaining fasteners near the lamp edge.
- Remove any visible screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Remove any 10mm nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Gently pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- Remove the turn signal socket, replace the bulb, then reinstall the lamp and fasteners snugly.
- If a plastic clip pin needs help, lift its center with a small flat-blade screwdriver, then pull the clip out.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm left and right rear turn signals flash at normal speed.
- ✅ Verify hazards work and the bulb is amber and bright.
- ✅ Make sure the access cover is fully seated to prevent rattles.
- ✅ Check the tail lamp sits flush with the body (no gaps).
