š§ SRX - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Youāll remove the rear tail lamp, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything. This is usually straightforward, but some SRX rear lamps use LED turn signals (no replaceable bulb), so Iām including both paths below.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: Your SRX uses a replaceable rear turn-signal bulb (not an LED-only lamp).
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ā ļø Let the bulbs cool before touching the lamp area.
- ā ļø Do not touch a new bulbās glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ā ļø Support the tail lamp while unplugging so it doesnāt drop and crack.
š§ Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Torx T15 screwdriver
- Torx T20 screwdriver
- Trim removal tool
- Small flathead screwdriver
- 1/4" drive torque wrench (in-lb)

- Rear turn signal bulb (7440) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- š æļø Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- šŖ Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp mounting screws.
- š§° Lay down a towel near the work area to protect paint and the lamp lens.
- š Trim removal tool note: itās a plastic pry tool used to pop panels/clips without scratching.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the rear tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate.
- Use a Torx T15 screwdriver (or Torx T20 screwdriver if that fits your screws) to remove the tail lamp retaining screws located on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (accessible with the liftgate open).
- Set the screws aside somewhere safe.
Step 2: Pull the tail lamp assembly straight back
- Grip the tail lamp with both hands.
- Pull straight rearward to release the locating pins/clips.
- If it feels stuck, use a trim removal tool to gently help it start moving. Donāt pry on the lens edge.
Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Behind the tail lamp, find the socket for the turn signal (usually the amber/clear section of the lamp).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it out of the housing.
- If the socket is tight, use a nitrile gloves grip and twist carefullyādo not crack the plastic.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (no twisting for a 7440-style wedge bulb).
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb (7440) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Apply a very thin smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not the bulb glass) to help prevent moisture.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Align the tail lamp locating pins with the body, then push the lamp straight forward until fully seated.
- Reinstall the retaining screws using a Torx T15 screwdriver or Torx T20 screwdriver.
- Torque to 2 NĀ·m (18 in-lbs) (lightly snugāsmall lamp screws strip easily).
Step 6: LED-lamp check (if there is no bulb socket)
- If you do not see a removable bulb socket and the lamp is sealed, your SRX likely has an LED turn signal.
- In that case, the fix is typically replacing the tail lamp assembly (or repairing wiring if the LED driver circuit is at fault).
- Use a small flathead screwdriver only to release electrical connector locksādo not force them.
ā After Repair
- š Turn the ignition ON and test left and right turn signals, hazards, and brake lights.
- š” Check the cluster for a ābulb outā message.
- š If the turn signal flashes fast (hyperflash), re-check bulb seating and correct bulb type, or the vehicle may be detecting an LED/incandescent mismatch.
- š§¼ Confirm the tail lamp sits flush and there are no gaps that could let water in.
