How to Replace Rear Taillight Bulbs on a 2022 Toyota Highlander
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts list, torque specs, safety tips, and post-repair checks

🔧 Highlander - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll be accessing the rear lamp units from inside the cargo area and behind the tailgate trim to replace the bulbs. Some 2022 trims use LEDs (which are not simple bulbs), so the exact steps depend on which rear lights you’re changing.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔹Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working on lights.
- 🔹Let the lamps cool down if they were just on; they can get hot.
- 🔹Do not touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- 🔹Keep metal tools away from both battery terminals at the same time.
- 🔹If you disconnect the battery, make sure you know your radio and settings may reset.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- Park the Highlander on level ground, set the parking brake, and shift to P.
- Open the rear liftgate fully for good access and light.
- Turn off all exterior lights using the headlight switch.
- Optional: Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket if you want maximum safety around wiring.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which taillights you’re changing
- 🔹On your Highlander, there are outer lamps on the body and inner lamps on the liftgate.
- 🔹Outer lamps usually hold tail/brake and turn signals; inner lamps usually hold reverse bulbs.
- 🔹Stand behind the vehicle and note: are you changing the outer body lamps, inner liftgate lamps, or both?
- Plan to do both sides the same way.
Step 2: Access the rear outer lamp (body-mounted) from inside
- 🔹Open the liftgate and look at the interior side trim near each rear corner.
- 🔹Use the flat trim removal tool to gently pry off the small access cover in the side trim panel behind the lamp area.
- 🔹Set the cover aside where it won’t get lost.
Step 3: Remove outer lamp mounting nuts
- 🔹Look through the opening you just uncovered; you’ll see lamp mounting nuts (typically 10mm).
- 🔹Use the 10mm socket, 6" extension, and ratchet to remove the nuts holding the lamp to the body.
- 🔹Carefully catch the nuts with your fingers so they don’t fall into the body cavity.
- If nuts are tight, break loose gently.
Step 4: Detach the outer lamp from the body
- 🔹From outside the vehicle, hold the lamp at the side edge.
- 🔹Pull the lamp straight rearward; it is held by locating pins in rubber grommets.
- 🔹Wiggle gently while pulling straight back until the pins release.
- Do not pry against painted body with metal.
Step 5: Disconnect wiring connector from outer lamp
- 🔹Support the lamp with one hand so it doesn’t hang by the wires.
- 🔹Locate the main wiring connector on the back of the lamp.
- 🔹Press the locking tab with your thumb and pull the connector straight off. Use the needle-nose pliers only if the tab is stubborn (gently).
Step 6: Remove and replace outer lamp bulbs
- 🔹On the back of the lamp, find the bulb sockets (round plastic pieces that twist out).
- 🔹Use your hand to rotate each socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn and pull it out.
- 🔹Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- 🔹Lightly apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the socket contacts using the clean shop rag.
- 🔹Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until it seats firmly.
- 🔹Reinsert the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Match each bulb type and color to the original.
Step 7: Reconnect and reinstall outer lamp
- 🔹Reconnect the wiring connector to the back of the lamp until it clicks.
- 🔹Align the locating pins on the lamp with the holes in the body.
- 🔹Press the lamp straight forward into place until it seats flush with the body.
- 🔹From inside, reinstall the mounting nuts by hand, then tighten them with the 10mm socket and ratchet until snug.
- Torque to 5–7 Nm (44–62 in-lbs) — just firmly snug, not very tight.
- 🔹Reinstall the interior access cover by pressing it back into the trim.
Step 8: Access inner liftgate lamp (for reverse and inner tail)
- 🔹With the liftgate open, look at the inner trim panel on the liftgate itself near each lamp.
- 🔹Use the flat trim removal tool to gently pry off the small rectangular access covers behind each inner lamp.
Step 9: Remove inner lamp bulb socket
- 🔹Reach through the opening and feel for the bulb socket (same style twist socket).
- 🔹Grasp the socket and turn it counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- 🔹Pull the socket out, bringing the bulb with it.
Step 10: Replace inner lamp bulbs (reverse lamps)
- 🔹Pull the old reverse bulb straight out of the socket.
- 🔹Apply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the socket contacts.
- 🔹Install the new reverse bulb into the socket, pushing straight in until snug.
- 🔹Place the bulb back into the lamp housing and twist the socket clockwise until it locks.
- 🔹Repeat on the other side.
Step 11: Reinstall inner trim access covers
- 🔹Align each access cover with its opening.
- 🔹Press firmly around the edges until all clips snap in place.
- If a clip breaks, use a new plastic push clip.
✅ After Repair
- 🔹If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative terminal using the 10mm socket and tighten securely.
- 🔹Turn the ignition to ON and switch on the parking lights; walk to the rear and verify both tail lights are lit evenly.
- 🔹Have a helper press the brake pedal while you confirm both brake lights are bright.
- 🔹Use the turn signals and hazard lights to check both rear turn signals.
- 🔹Shift to reverse (with your foot on the brake, parking brake set) and confirm both reverse lights come on.
- 🔹Check that all lamp lenses sit flush with the body and there are no gaps.
