How to Replace Rear Taillight Bulbs on a 2019 Toyota Camry
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts, safety tips, and testing instructions to change all rear bulbs at home

🔧 Camry - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You can replace the rear light bulbs on your Camry at home with basic tools. We’ll remove the interior trunk trim, access the bulb holders, swap the bulbs, then test everything.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔋 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- đźš« Do not press the brake pedal or use the turn signals while you have bulb sockets out.
- 🔥 Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes before touching them; they can get hot.
- 🧤 Avoid touching glass bulbs with bare fingers; oil from skin can shorten bulb life.
- đź’ˇ Work in a well-lit, dry area with the parking brake set.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- 🪛 Trim removal tool (plastic)
- 🧤 Mechanic gloves
- 🕶️ Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- đź’ˇ Rear turn signal bulbs (7440 or equivalent, amber) - Qty: 2
- đź’ˇ Rear backup/reverse light bulbs (7440 or equivalent, clear) - Qty: 2
- đź’ˇ Rear side marker / parking bulbs (if equipped, 168/194 style) - Qty: 2
- 🔧 Trunk trim clips - Qty: 4–6 (optional, in case any break)
On your XSE, the main tail/brake lamps are LEDs and not user‑replaceable bulbs; you replace the whole taillight if an LED fails.
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park the Camry on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch ignition OFF.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can see and reach both rear corners.
- If you have a removable trunk floor panel, lift it out for more room.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open trunk and remove side trunk liners
- Open the trunk fully so it stays up by itself.
- On the left side, find the carpeted trunk side liner behind the taillight area.
- Use the trim removal tool to gently pry out the plastic push clips holding the liner edge. These clips are small plastic fasteners.
- Pull the liner back just enough to see the back of the taillight and bulb sockets.
- Repeat on the right side with the trim removal tool.
Step 2: Identify the bulb sockets
- Use your LED work light to look at the rear of the taillight from inside the trunk.
- You will see round plastic sockets that twist into the taillight housing.
- On most 2019 XSE:
- Upper or outer socket = rear turn signal bulb (amber)
- Lower or inner socket = backup/reverse bulb (clear/white)
- Note exact positions before removing anything.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Pick one side to start, for example the left side turn signal bulb.
- Hold the socket firmly by hand.
- Turn the socket about 1/4 turn counterclockwise to unlock it.
- Pull the socket straight out of the taillight housing.
- No tools are needed here, just hand force; if tight, gently wiggle while turning.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- With the socket out, you’ll see the bulb plugged into it.
- Grasp the bulb base (not the glass) with your gloved fingers.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket; it is a push‑fit “wedge” type.
- If stuck, gently rock it side to side while pulling.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Take a new bulb of the same type (for example, 7440 amber for the turn signal).
- Avoid touching the glass with bare hands; use gloves.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated.
- Bulb should feel snug, not loose.
Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket into the taillight
- Align the tabs on the socket with the slots in the taillight opening.
- Insert the socket straight into the hole.
- Turn the socket about 1/4 turn clockwise to lock it into place.
- Confirm it is seated flat and does not wiggle.
Step 7: Repeat for the reverse bulbs and the other side
- Move to the backup/reverse light socket on the same side.
- Repeat Steps 3–6 using the correct 7440 clear bulb.
- Then do both sockets on the opposite side of the trunk.
- Always replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
Step 8: Test the lights before reassembling trim
- Temporarily move the trunk liners aside so nothing touches the bulbs.
- Have a helper sit in the driver’s seat.
- Ask them to:
- Turn ignition to ON (engine can stay off).
- Activate left turn signal, then right turn signal.
- Shift to reverse (with foot on brake) to check reverse lights, then back to Park.
- Watch from behind to confirm all bulbs work and are bright.
- Turn ignition OFF again.
Step 9: Reinstall trunk liners and clips
- Fold the trunk side liners back into their original position.
- Align the holes in the liner with the body holes.
- Push the plastic clips back in by hand until they snap in place.
- If any clip is damaged, replace it with a new one from your clip kit.
- Make sure the liners are smooth and not interfering with the trunk latch or weather seal.
âś… After Repair
- 🔄 Do one more full check: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights with a helper.
- 🧹 Remove tools and any loose clips from the trunk area.
- 📦 Keep old bulbs for a few days as emergency spares if they still work.
