🔧 RAV4 - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll be replacing the rear taillight bulbs on both sides of your RAV4. The bulbs sit inside the rear lamp assemblies and are accessible from inside the cargo area.

This guide covers the outer taillights on the body (running/brake/turn bulb). The left and right sides are the same.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸Always switch the light switch to OFF and remove the key from the ignition before working on bulbs.
  • 🔸Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes before touching them; they can be hot.
  • 🔸Do not touch the glass of new bulbs with bare fingers; oil from skin can shorten bulb life.
  • 🔸Work on level ground and keep the transmission in PARK with the parking brake set.
  • 🔸Battery disconnection is not required, but you can disconnect the negative terminal with a 10mm wrench if you prefer extra safety.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔹Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 🔹10mm socket
  • 🔹1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🔹1/4" drive 3" extension
  • 🔹Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
  • 🔹Work light or flashlight
  • 🔹Clean gloves
  • 🔹Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔹Rear combination lamp tail/stop bulb (7443 type) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
  • 🔹Rear turn signal bulb (if separate, 7440/7443 type) - Qty: 2 (optional, if burned out)
  • 🔹Rear side marker bulb (T20/194 style, if equipped) - Qty: 2 (optional)
  • 🔹Dielectric grease for bulb sockets - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 🔹Replacement plastic push clips - Qty: 4 (optional, in case any break)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park the RAV4 on level ground, set the parking brake, and put the transmission in PARK.
  • Turn the headlight switch and all lights to OFF.
  • Open the rear liftgate fully so you can access the inner trim panels.
  • Lay a towel or blanket in the cargo area so you don’t scratch interior plastic as you work.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the cargo area and locate the access area

  • Open the liftgate all the way.
  • On each side of the cargo area, find the inner plastic trim panel that sits directly behind the taillight on the outside of the car.
  • Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently pry off any small rectangular access cover in that area if present.

Step 2: Remove the inner fasteners

  • Look for plastic push clips or a small screw holding the trim near the taillight area.
  • Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove any visible screw.
  • Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently pop out the plastic push clips; slide the tip under the clip head and lever it out.
  • Keep clips in a small container so you don’t lose them.

Step 3: Pull back the interior trim to access the lamp nuts

  • Gently pull the interior side trim away from the body just enough to see the back of the taillight assembly.
  • Do not bend the trim sharply; it’s flexible but can crease.
  • Locate the small 10mm nuts or plastic wing-nuts that secure the taillight to the body.

Step 4: Remove the taillight mounting nuts

  • Install the 10mm socket onto the 1/4" drive ratchet with the 3" extension.
  • Use the ratchet and 10mm socket to remove the nuts holding the taillight to the body (usually 2 per side).
  • Turn counterclockwise to loosen; be careful not to drop the nuts inside the body cavity.
  • Use one hand under the nut area to catch dropped hardware.
  • No torque spec needed for removal.

Step 5: Remove the taillight assembly from the body

  • Move to the outside of the RAV4, standing behind the taillight you are working on.
  • Place one hand on the outer face of the taillight and the other on the side edge.
  • Pull the taillight straight back toward you. There are alignment pins that sit in rubber grommets; it may feel stuck at first.
  • If needed, gently wiggle the lamp while pulling straight back. Do not pry against painted surfaces.
  • Pull straight back, not sideways, to avoid breaking pins.

Step 6: Disconnect the wiring and locate the bulb sockets

  • With the taillight loose, support it with one hand.
  • Locate the main electrical connector on the rear of the taillight.
  • Press the small locking tab on the connector with your thumb and pull the plug straight out.
  • Now identify the bulb sockets: they are the round plastic pieces that twist into the housing.
  • For the main tail/stop bulb (7443), find the socket positioned toward the center of the taillight.

Step 7: Remove the old taillight bulb

  • Hold the bulb socket firmly and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the taillight housing.
  • Grasp the old bulb with a gloved hand and pull it straight out of the socket. It may be snug, but it just pulls out—no twisting.
  • If the socket is dirty or corroded, wipe it with a clean, dry cloth.

Step 8: Install the new bulb

  • Apply a very small dab of dielectric grease to the metal contacts inside the socket if you have it. Dielectric grease helps prevent corrosion.
  • Holding the new 7443 taillight bulb by the base (not the glass), push it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Insert the socket back into the taillight housing, aligning the tabs, then twist it 1/4 turn clockwise until it locks.
  • Repeat this process for any other rear bulb you want to replace now (turn signal or side marker) using the correct bulb type.

Step 9: Reconnect wiring and test the bulbs

  • Plug the main electrical connector back into the taillight until it clicks.
  • Temporarily hold the taillight in place by hand (do not install nuts yet).
  • Have a helper turn the parking lights on and press the brake pedal.
  • Verify the new bulb(s) light up for both tail (dim) and brake (bright) functions.
  • Turn lights back off once testing is complete.

Step 10: Reinstall the taillight assembly

  • Align the taillight locating pins with the holes in the body.
  • Push the taillight straight forward into place until it sits flush with the body lines.
  • From inside the cargo area, reinstall the 10mm nuts by hand first so they do not cross-thread.
  • Use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension to snug the nuts.
  • Tighten just until secure: about 5–6 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs). Do not overtighten; the housing is plastic.

Step 11: Reinstall interior trim and repeat on the other side

  • Push the interior trim back into its original position.
  • Reinstall any plastic push clips by pressing them straight in until they click.
  • Reinstall any screw with the Phillips #2 screwdriver until snug.
  • Repeat Steps 1–10 on the opposite side to replace the bulb there as well.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔹Turn on the parking lights and walk behind the RAV4 to confirm both taillights are on and equal in brightness.
  • 🔹Have a helper press the brake pedal and activate hazard flashers; confirm both brake lights and turn signals work correctly.
  • 🔹Check that the taillight assemblies sit evenly and flush with the body panels.
  • 🔹Make sure all trim pieces are fully clipped in and there are no loose tools in the cargo area.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80–$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10–$30 (parts only, depending on bulb type)

You Save: $50–$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3–0.5 hours.
