🔧 Maxima - Rear Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Maxima, some rear light functions may use replaceable bulbs (commonly turn signal and reverse), while the parking/brake “taillight” portion is often an LED built into the lamp (not a bulb). I’ll show you how to access both the trunk-lid and quarter-panel lamp areas and replace the serviceable bulbs.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key/start button OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; halogen bulbs can burn you.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch a new halogen bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil shortens bulb life); use gloves.
- ⚠️ Support the trunk trim so you don’t crack clips or pinch wiring.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Trim clip removal tool
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Torque wrench (in-lb or low-range Nm)

- Tail lamp assembly (if your brake/taillight LED is failed) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Trim panel clips (optional) - Qty: 5
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
- Do a quick check: have someone press the brake, then try turn signals and reverse (with the brake held and wheel chocked). This tells you which bulb/function is actually out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which rear light is out
- Use a flashlight and walk behind your Maxima while a helper operates: parking lights, brake pedal, left/right turn, and reverse.
- If the “taillight/brake” portion is out and it’s an LED strip/module, it may not have a replaceable bulb (lamp assembly replacement may be required).
Step 2: Access the rear lamp bulb area from inside the trunk
- Use a trim clip removal tool to carefully pop out trunk-liner clips near the rear corner you’re working on.
- If a clip is stubborn, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently lift the clip center, then pull the clip out with the trim tool.
- Tip: Pull straight out to avoid breaking clips.
Step 3: Identify the correct bulb socket
- Use a flashlight to locate the bulb sockets on the back of the lamp area (you’ll see a wiring pigtail going to each socket).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the lamp.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some styles are a push-in; others may require a slight twist—match what you see).
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket (firm, straight push).
- Reinstall the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise by hand until it seats.
Step 5: If your “taillight/brake” is LED (no bulb): replace the lamp assembly (only if needed)
- With the trunk liner pulled back, disconnect the lamp wiring connector by pressing the lock tab (use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to help the tab move).
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp mounting nuts.
- Carefully pull the lamp straight out from the body (support it so you don’t scratch paint).
- Install the new lamp, start the nuts by hand, then tighten with the torque wrench (in-lb or low-range Nm).
- Torque to 5.5 Nm (49 in-lbs).
Step 6: Reassemble trunk trim
- Reposition the trunk liner.
- Press the clips back in by hand; if any are damaged, replace with new clips.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, hazards, and reverse lights.
- Make sure the bulb socket seals are seated to prevent moisture inside the lamp.
- If a new bulb still doesn’t work, the next checks are the fuse and the socket condition (corrosion/heat damage).
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120-$300 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $10-$60 (parts only, depending on which bulbs)
You Save: $110-$240 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
