๐Ÿ”ง RAV4 - Taillight Bulb Replacement

Youโ€™ll be replacing the rear tail/brake light bulbs on both sides of your RAV4. These bulbs sit in the outer tail lamp assemblies on the body (not the ones on the liftgate) and can be accessed from inside the cargo area.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5โ€“1 hour

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ๐Ÿ”Œ Switch the exterior lights OFF so the bulbs and sockets are not live.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ If the lights were just on, let bulbs cool for a few minutes to avoid burns.
  • ๐Ÿงค Avoid touching the glass part of new bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ๐Ÿš— Keep the vehicle on level ground with the parking brake firmly applied.

๐Ÿ”ง Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • Work light or flashlight
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

๐Ÿ”ฉ Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Tail/stop light bulb (P21/5W or 7443 equivalent, dual-filament) - Qty: 2 (replace both sides)
  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber, if you choose to replace while open) - Qty: 2 (optional)
  • Rear side marker bulb (if you choose to replace while open) - Qty: 2 (optional)
  • Dielectric grease for bulb contacts - Qty: 1 small tube (optional but recommended)

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park the RAV4 on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
  • Turn ignition OFF and remove the key.
  • Turn headlight switch to OFF so rear lights are off.
  • Open the rear liftgate to access the inside cargo side panels.
  • Take a quick photo of the tail light area before you start for reference.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the rear of the tail light

  • Open the rear liftgate fully.
  • On the inside edge of the left tail light (driver side), locate the small interior trim cover in the cargo area near the tail lamp.
  • Use the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry off the small access panel in the interior trim to expose the tail light mounting area.

Step 2: Remove the tail light mounting bolts

  • Inside the access opening, locate the two tail light mounting bolts.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" socket extension to remove the two 10mm bolts holding the tail light assembly.
  • Place the bolts somewhere safe so they do not roll away.

Step 3: Release and remove the tail light assembly

  • From outside the vehicle, hold the tail light assembly with both hands.
  • Pull the tail light straight rearward (toward you). The lamp is held by plastic guide pins that pop out of rubber grommets.
  • Wiggle gently if it feels stuck.
  • Do not pull too far; the wiring harness is still connected.

Step 4: Disconnect the bulb socket

  • Look at the back of the tail light assembly. Youโ€™ll see several bulb sockets.
  • The tail/brake bulb is usually in the larger dual-filament socket near the middle of the assembly.
  • Grip the correct bulb socket and turn it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn using your hand; no tool should be needed.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the tail light housing to expose the bulb.

Step 5: Remove the old bulb

  • Hold the bulb base firmly and pull it straight out of the socket. If it is a push-fit type (wedge bulb), pull it straight out. If it is bayonet style, push in gently and twist counterclockwise to release.
  • If stuck, you can gently wiggle while pulling, but do not use pliers on the glass.

Step 6: Install the new bulb

  • Before installing, apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the metal contacts in the socket to help prevent corrosion (optional).
  • Insert the new tail/brake bulb into the socket. Make sure it is fully seated and oriented correctly:
    • If wedge type: push straight in until it stops.
    • If bayonet type: align the pins, push in, and turn clockwise until it locks.
  • Do not touch the glass with bare fingers. If you do, wipe with a clean tissue.

Step 7: Reinstall the bulb socket into the tail light

  • Align the tabs of the bulb socket with the opening in the tail light housing.
  • Insert the socket fully, then turn it clockwise about 1/4 turn by hand until it locks into place.

Step 8: Test the new bulb before reassembly

  • Temporarily let the tail light hang supported by one hand or rest it gently on a soft cloth to avoid scratches.
  • Have a helper sit in the driver seat.
  • Ask them to turn the parking lights ON and then press the brake pedal.
  • Confirm the tail light glows dimly with lights ON and brightly with the brake pressed.
  • Turn lights OFF again before continuing.

Step 9: Reinstall the tail light assembly

  • Guide the tail light assembly back into place on the vehicle body.
  • Align the plastic guide pins with their holes in the body.
  • Push the assembly straight forward until it seats flush with the body.
  • Inside the cargo area, reinstall the two 10mm bolts using the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet.
  • Tighten the bolts snugly by hand. Toyota does not publish a critical torque here; aim for about 5โ€“7 Nm (4โ€“5 ft-lbs)โ€”just snug, not over-tight.

Step 10: Reinstall the interior access cover

  • Snap the small interior trim access cover back into place over the opening in the cargo trim.
  • Press around the edges to ensure it is fully seated.

Step 11: Repeat for the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1โ€“10 on the right (passenger) side tail light so both sides have new bulbs.
  • Always replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.

โœ… After Repair

  • ๐Ÿ”ฆ Turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off) and switch on the parking lights; walk behind the RAV4 and confirm both tail lights glow evenly.
  • ๐Ÿ›‘ Press the brake pedal (or have a helper do it) and confirm both brake lights brighten evenly.
  • ๐Ÿ” Check turn signals and reverse lights while you are there, in case another bulb is weak or out.
  • ๐Ÿงฝ Make sure both tail light assemblies sit flush with the body and there are no gaps where water could enter.

๐Ÿ’ฐ DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80โ€“$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10โ€“$25 (parts only, both bulbs)

You Save: $70โ€“$115 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100โ€“$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3โ€“0.5 hours.
