🔧 Rogue - Rear Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll be removing the rear light assemblies, pulling out the bulb holders, and swapping the old bulbs for new ones on both sides of your Rogue. This restores proper visibility and keeps you legal and safe at night.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Park on a flat surface, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • ⚠️ Turn the headlights and ignition off before working on the lights.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot right after use.
  • ⚠️ Avoid touching new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ You do not need to disconnect the hybrid/high-voltage system for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🛠️ 10mm socket
  • 🛠️ 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🛠️ 1/4" drive extension (3–6")
  • 🛠️ Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 🛠️ Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
  • 🛠️ Needle-nose pliers
  • 🛠️ Clean nitrile or cotton gloves
  • 🛠️ Safety glasses
  • 🛠️ Shop light or flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 💡 Rear tail/stop light bulbs (left and right outer lamps) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
  • 💡 Rear tail/stop light bulbs (left and right inner liftgate lamps, if equipped) - Qty: 2 (optional, replace in pairs)
  • 💡 Rear turn signal bulbs (optional while you’re in there) - Qty: 2
  • 💡 Rear side marker bulbs (if separate, optional) - Qty: 2
  • 🧼 Dielectric grease for bulb contacts - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 🧽 Alcohol wipes or glass cleaner (for cleaning lamp lenses) - Qty: 1
  • 🔩 Cargo trim panel clips - Qty: 4–6 (in case any break)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Rogue on level ground with enough room to open the liftgate fully.
  • Shift the transmission to P and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or switch off the Start/Stop button.
  • Open the liftgate and remove any cargo on the left and right side so you can reach the inner trim panels.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulbs you’re replacing

  • 🛠️ Walk to the rear of your Rogue and look at the lights: there is an outer taillight on each rear corner (on the body) and an optional inner taillight on the liftgate itself.
  • 🛠️ The main tail/stop bulb is usually in the outer lamp; the inner lamp (on the liftgate) may also have a tail or additional stop light depending on equipment.
  • 🛠️ You will follow almost the same process for both sides; start with the side that’s burned out, then repeat on the other side.

Step 2: Access the left rear outer taillight mounting area

  • 🛠️ Open the liftgate fully.
  • 🛠️ On the left side inside the cargo area, locate the small access panel or trim piece near the rear corner where the taillight sits.
  • 🛠️ Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently pry off the access panel or loosen the trim. Work slowly to avoid breaking clips

Step 3: Remove the left outer taillight assembly

  • 🛠️ Look inside the opened trim area for the taillight mounting fasteners; you will usually see two 10mm nuts or bolts.
  • 🛠️ Use the 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and extension to remove the nuts/bolts securing the taillight.
  • 🛠️ Keep the nuts/bolts in a safe spot so you don’t lose them.
  • 🛠️ From outside the vehicle, place one hand on the side of the taillight and gently pull it straight rearward. It is held by alignment pins that can be snug.
  • 🛠️ Wiggle gently while pulling; do not pry with a metal tool. Pull straight back, not sideways
  • 🛠️ Nissan does not publish a specific torque for these nuts/bolts; when reinstalling, you will snug them firmly by hand without overtightening.

Step 4: Disconnect the bulb holders

  • 🛠️ Once the taillight is free, support it with one hand so it doesn’t hang by the wires.
  • 🛠️ On the back of the taillight, you’ll see round bulb holders (sockets) that twist into the housing.
  • 🛠️ Note which socket is the tail/stop bulb (usually the larger one in the middle or upper area); you can have someone press the brake (with ignition on) beforehand to confirm, but turn ignition off again before working.
  • 🛠️ Grip the bulb holder and twist it counterclockwise by hand about a quarter-turn to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • 🛠️ If it’s stuck, use needle-nose pliers very gently on the plastic tabs, but avoid crushing them.

Step 5: Remove the old bulb

  • 🛠️ Put on your clean nitrile or cotton gloves to avoid getting oils on the new bulb.
  • 🛠️ Look at how the old bulb sits in the socket: some push straight in and pull straight out; others may have a small bayonet-style twist.
  • 🛠️ Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand. If tight, gently wiggle while pulling; do not twist the socket itself.

Step 6: Install the new bulb

  • 🛠️ Before installing, check that the new bulb matches the old one in base style and size.
  • 🛠️ Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the metal contacts of the socket if you have it; this helps prevent corrosion.
  • 🛠️ With gloves still on, push the new bulb firmly into the socket until it is fully seated and feels secure.
  • 🛠️ Do not touch the glass part of the bulb; if you do, wipe it with an alcohol wipe and let it dry.

Step 7: Reinstall the bulb holder and test

  • 🛠️ Insert the bulb holder back into the taillight housing, aligning the tabs with the slots.
  • 🛠️ Twist the holder clockwise by hand until it stops and feels locked.
  • 🛠️ Temporarily hold the taillight in place (don’t bolt it yet).
  • 🛠️ Have a helper turn the ignition to ON and press the brake pedal while you look at the light to confirm the tail/stop bulb works. Also check the taillights with the headlight switch turned on.
  • 🛠️ Turn ignition and lights off again before continuing.

Step 8: Reinstall the left outer taillight assembly

  • 🛠️ Line up the alignment pins on the back of the taillight with the holes in the body.
  • 🛠️ Press the taillight straight forward into place until it seats flush with the body.
  • 🛠️ From inside the cargo area, reinstall the nuts/bolts using the 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • 🛠️ Tighten them until they are snug and the lamp is secure; do not crank down hard, as this can crack the plastic housing. Stop once the lamp no longer moves
  • 🛠️ Reinstall the interior trim or access panel by pushing it back into place. If any clips broke, replace them with new ones.

Step 9: Repeat for the right outer taillight

  • 🛠️ Repeat Steps 2–8 on the right side outer taillight to replace the matching bulb.
  • 🛠️ Always replace bulbs in pairs so brightness and color match side to side.

Step 10: (If equipped) Replace inner liftgate taillight bulbs

  • 🛠️ If your Rogue has bulbs in the inner liftgate lamps, open the liftgate and locate the small access covers on the inside trim directly behind those lights.
  • 🛠️ Use the plastic trim removal tool to pop off the covers.
  • 🛠️ Twist the bulb holders counterclockwise by hand, pull them out, and swap the bulbs just like in Steps 5–7.
  • 🛠️ Reinstall the holders, snap the covers back on, and verify operation with the lights on and brakes applied.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Turn the ignition ON and switch on the parking/headlights; check that both rear tail lamps (left and right) glow evenly.
  • 🧪 Have a helper press the brake pedal; confirm both brake lights are bright and equal.
  • 🧪 With the turn signals and hazard lights on, confirm all rear bulbs flash correctly (if you changed any others while there).
  • 🧪 Take a short drive at night and check reflections in windows or ask someone to follow you and confirm rear lights are clearly visible.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80–$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15–$40 (parts only, depending on bulb type)

You Save: $40–$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3–0.5 hours.
