How to Replace Rear Taillight Bulbs on a 2014 Toyota RAV4
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts, safety tips, and testing to change both rear taillight bulbs

🔧 RAV4 - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the rear taillight (running light) bulbs on both sides of your RAV4. This means removing each rear light assembly, swapping the bulbs, and reinstalling everything so your lights are bright and legal again.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key so no lights are powered while you work.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for at least 5–10 minutes if they were just on; they can get hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of new bulbs with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Work in a well-lit, flat area and keep the parking brake engaged so the RAV4 cannot roll.
- ⚠️ Keep small bolts and clips in a container so you don’t lose them.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park the RAV4 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch and all lights to OFF.
- Open the rear liftgate to access the inside of the rear lamp areas.
- If you have items in the cargo area, remove them so you have room to work.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open cargo area and locate access points
- Open the rear liftgate fully.
- On the left side, look at the inner cargo wall near the taillight; you’ll see a small access panel or trim area next to the lamp.
- Repeat on the right side so you know where both are; you’ll do the same steps on each side.
Step 2: Remove the side access trim
- Use the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry open the small interior access panel or loosen the edge of the trim near the taillight area.
- If there is a plastic flap, just pull it open by hand. If it’s a removable panel, carefully pop it out and set it aside.
- Pry slowly to avoid cracking the plastic.
Step 3: Remove taillight mounting bolts
- Look through the opening toward the back of the taillight; you should see two small nuts or bolts holding the lamp.
- Install the 10mm socket on the 1/4" drive ratchet with the extension.
- Use the 10mm socket to remove the two taillight mounting nuts/bolts. Turn counterclockwise.
- Carefully place the hardware in a safe spot so you don’t lose it.
Step 4: Release the taillight from the body
- Go outside to the rear corner of the RAV4.
- Hold the taillight assembly with both hands.
- Pull the taillight straight rearward (toward you), not sideways. There are plastic locating pins that pop out of rubber grommets.
- If it feels stuck, gently wiggle while pulling backward. Do not pry with metal tools.
- Support the lamp so it doesn’t drop.
Step 5: Disconnect the wiring harness (if needed)
- You’ll see a wiring connector plugged into the rear of the taillight.
- Press the tab on the connector with your thumb and pull the plug straight out by hand.
- If the harness is long enough, you may leave it connected and just tilt the lamp to access the bulb sockets. If it feels tight, unplug it fully.
Step 6: Identify the taillight bulb socket
- On the rear of the taillight, you’ll see several bulb sockets.
- The tail/stop bulb (7443) is usually the upper or inner middle socket (dual-filament bulb). It has two brightness levels: dim for tail, bright for brake.
- The turn signal and reverse lights are other sockets; you can ignore them if you’re only doing taillights.
Step 7: Remove the old taillight bulb
- Grip the taillight bulb socket with your hand.
- Turn the socket about a quarter turn counterclockwise.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
- Pull the old bulb straight out from the socket with your fingers. Rock it gently if needed.
Step 8: Prepare and install the new taillight bulb
- Open the package for the new 7443 taillight bulb, being careful not to touch the glass with bare fingers.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with an isopropyl alcohol wipe and dry with a clean rag.
- Optional: Apply a tiny bit of dielectric grease to the metal contact areas on the bulb base. This helps prevent corrosion.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats firmly.
Step 9: Reinstall the bulb socket into the taillight
- Align the tabs on the bulb socket with the slot in the taillight housing.
- Insert the socket into the opening.
- Turn the socket about a quarter turn clockwise until it locks firmly in place.
Step 10: Test the new bulb before reassembly
- Temporarily reconnect the wiring harness to the taillight if you unplugged it earlier.
- Have a helper turn the parking lights/headlights ON.
- Check that the taillight (running light) illuminates on the side you just replaced.
- Have them press the brake pedal and confirm the same bulb brightens.
- If it does not light, turn the socket out again and check that the bulb is fully seated and the connector is fully plugged in.
Step 11: Reinstall the taillight assembly
- Turn the lights OFF again.
- Make sure the wiring harness is connected and routed so it will not be pinched.
- Align the plastic locating pins on the taillight with the holes in the body.
- Push the taillight straight forward into place until it clicks and sits flush with the body.
Step 12: Tighten the mounting bolts
- From inside the cargo area, reinstall the two 10mm nuts/bolts by hand to start the threads.
- Use the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to snug them evenly.
- Do not overtighten; this is plastic.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) if you have a torque wrench.
Step 13: Reinstall interior trim / access panel
- Push the interior access cover or trim back into position.
- Press firmly around the edges until all clips are seated.
Step 14: Repeat steps for the other side
- Perform the same steps (2–13) on the opposite taillight to replace the second bulb.
- Always replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights/parking lights ON and walk behind your RAV4. Confirm both taillights (running lights) are on and equally bright.
- Have a helper press the brake pedal. Check that both brake lights brighten correctly.
- Turn on the hazard lights and make sure turn signals also work, just to confirm nothing was disturbed.
- Close the liftgate and verify the taillights still sit flush with the body and don’t move if gently pushed.
