šŸ”§ Outback - Rear Taillight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)

On your Outback, some rear lighting functions use replaceable bulbs (most commonly the rear turn signals and reverse lights), while the tail/stop light may be LED and not a replaceable ā€œbulb.ā€ The first step is to confirm which rear light function is out so you replace the correct bulbs on both left and right sides.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before working near the rear lamps.
  • āš ļø If you’ll test lights, keep hands clear of moving parts and hot exhaust components.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the glass of halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber, match your old bulb number) - Qty: 2
  • Reverse light bulb (clear, match your old bulb number) - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear liftgate for access and good lighting.
  • Identify the failed function: turn signal, reverse, or tail/stop.
  • Tip: Use your phone camera as a mirror.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing

  • Have a helper operate the lights: parking lights, brake pedal, turn signals, and reverse (with the vehicle safely held and your helper in the driver seat).
  • Use a flashlight to see which section of each rear lamp is not lighting.
  • If the tail/stop function is out and your lamp has LED for that function, it will not have a twist-out bulb socket for that section (it typically requires lamp assembly repair/replacement).

Step 2: Access the rear lamp service opening (left and right)

  • In the rear cargo area, locate the access cover behind each taillamp area.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to gently pop the cover open.
  • If there is a stubborn clip, use a small flathead screwdriver carefully to start the edge, then switch back to the trim tool.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Reach through the opening and find the bulb socket for the failed function.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • Use a flashlight so you don’t pull the wrong socket.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves to avoid touching the bulb glass.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if tight).
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Tip: Match the old bulb’s number and shape.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and close the access cover

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Twist clockwise by hand until it locks fully in place.
  • Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back in until it snaps flush.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2-5 on the opposite taillamp so both sides have matching new bulbs.
  • Use the flashlight again to ensure you’re changing the same function on both sides.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards, and reverse lights.
  • Verify both left and right sides match in brightness and color.
  • If the new bulb still doesn’t work, the next checks are the fuse and the bulb socket contact condition (corrosion/overheating).

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,200-₹3,500 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹300-₹1,200 (parts only)

You Save: ₹900-₹2,300 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800-₹2,000/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
