🔧 Sonata - Rear Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Sonata, the rear lamps can be a mix of replaceable bulbs (usually turn signal/reverse) and non-serviceable LED sections (often the tail/running light and brake light on higher trims). I’ll walk you through the bulb-access method from inside the trunk, and I’ll also show you how to confirm whether your “taillight” is actually an LED module that can’t be re-bulbed.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and keep the key fob at least 10 feet away.
- ⚠️ Do not touch any orange high-voltage cables or connectors in the trunk area.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before handling; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and avoid touching a new bulb’s glass with bare fingers.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Small flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (match OE bulb number) - Qty: 2
- Rear reverse light bulb (match OE bulb number) - Qty: 2
- Rear lamp housing (if your “taillight” is LED and not serviceable) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can access the side trunk liners.
- If you’re not sure which bulb it is, turn on the lights and press the brake (have a helper) to confirm which function is out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm whether the failed light is a bulb or LED
- Use a small flashlight and look closely at the section that’s out.
- If that section has a bulb socket on the back of the lamp (you’ll see a twist-lock socket), it’s serviceable.
- If there is no socket for that section and it’s a sealed LED area, the “bulb” is not replaceable and the lamp assembly is replaced as a unit.
- If you tell me which light is out, I’ll confirm.
Step 2: Access the rear lamp sockets (trunk side)
- Open the trunk.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop open the access cover behind the taillamp (or pull back the trunk side liner near the lamp).
- If your liner is held by clips/screws, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Find the socket that corresponds to the failed function (turn/reverse).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
- If it’s tight, use a plastic trim removal tool to help you get a better grip without damaging plastic.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (some types twist slightly first).
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
- Use nitrile gloves to keep oils off the bulb.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the lamp.
- Twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
- Turn the car ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side and reassemble trim
- Repeat Steps 2–5 for the other rear lamp.
- Reinstall any trunk trim clips/screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
Step 7: If the failed “taillight” is an LED section (lamp removal overview)
- Remove the trunk side liner enough to access the lamp mounting nuts.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the lamp nuts.
- Support the lamp and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- Install the replacement lamp and reinstall nuts: Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- Confirm all rear light functions work on both sides (tail/running, brake, turn, reverse).
- If a new bulb still doesn’t work, swap it to the other side to verify the bulb isn’t defective, then inspect the socket for corrosion.
- Make sure the trunk liner is clipped back fully so it won’t rattle.

- Which exact light is out: tail/running light, brake light, turn signal, or reverse light?
- Is it out on both left and right sides, or just one side?
