🔧 Accord - Taillight Bulb Replacement

Your Accord uses a mix of LED lamps and replaceable bulbs. On this model, the main running/brake lights are LED (part of the taillight assembly), but the turn signal and reverse (backup) lights use replaceable bulbs. You’ll be replacing the serviceable bulbs in the rear lamp assemblies.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸Always turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before working on lights.
  • 🔸Do not work on the lights with the gear selector out of Park.
  • 🔸Allow the bulbs to cool before touching; they can get hot.
  • 🔸Avoid touching the glass of new bulbs with bare fingers; use clean gloves or a tissue.
  • 🔸If you disconnect the 12V battery, you may lose some radio/clock settings, but it’s not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔸Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 🔸Trim removal tool (plastic pry tool)
  • 🔸10mm socket
  • 🔸1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🔸Short extension (1/4" drive)
  • 🔸Work light or flashlight
  • 🔸Mechanic gloves
  • 🔸Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔸Rear turn signal bulbs (amber) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
  • 🔸Rear backup (reverse) light bulbs (clear/white) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
  • 🔸Dielectric grease for bulb sockets - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 🔸Replacement trunk trim clips - Qty: 4–6 (optional, in case originals break)

On this Accord, the tail/stop LEDs are built into the lamp and are not bulb-replaceable. If an LED is out, the whole taillight assembly must be replaced.

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park the Accord on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch the ignition OFF.
  • Open the trunk to access the inner taillights and trunk trim.
  • Remove any luggage or mats from the trunk so you have room to work.
  • Keep the new bulbs within reach but in their packaging until you’re ready to install them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which lights you’re replacing

  • 🔸The outer taillight is on the rear quarter panel (body side).
  • 🔸The inner taillight is on the trunk lid itself.
  • 🔸On this Accord: running/brake lights are LED; the turn signal and reverse light use replaceable bulbs.
  • Plan to replace both sides so brightness matches.

Step 2: Access the inner trunk-lid bulbs (reverse lights)

  • 🔸Open the trunk fully and support it.
  • 🔸Use the trim removal tool to gently pop out the plastic clips holding the small fabric or plastic cover on the inside of the trunk lid directly behind each inner lamp.
  • 🔸Remove the cover panel and set it aside where it won’t get stepped on.

Step 3: Remove the reverse light bulb holder

  • 🔸Locate the bulb socket directly behind the reverse light area on the inner taillight (trunk lid side).
  • 🔸Grip the socket and turn it counterclockwise about a quarter-turn with your hand; no tool needed.
  • 🔸Pull the socket straight out from the lamp housing.

Step 4: Replace the reverse light bulb

  • 🔸Gently pull the old bulb straight out of the socket with your fingers.
  • 🔸If it’s tight, wiggle it very slightly as you pull.
  • 🔸Using gloves or a tissue, push the new reverse bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated.
  • 🔸Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the metal contacts if you have it. (Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps keep moisture out of electrical connections.)

Step 5: Reinstall the reverse light socket

  • 🔸Insert the bulb and socket back into the taillight opening, aligning the tabs.
  • 🔸Turn the socket clockwise a quarter-turn by hand until it stops firmly.
  • Make sure it’s locked; a loose socket can cause flickering.

Step 6: Access the outer taillight bulbs (turn signals)

  • 🔸Inside the trunk, peel back the side trunk liner near each outer taillight.
  • 🔸You may need to remove a plastic fastener: use the trim removal tool to pop any clips, or a Phillips #2 screwdriver if they are screw-type clips.
  • 🔸Gently pull the liner away enough to see the backside of the outer taillight.

Step 7: Remove the turn signal bulb holder

  • 🔸Locate the bulb socket for the turn signal (usually the lower or outermost socket on the taillight body).
  • 🔸Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter-turn by hand.
  • 🔸Pull the socket straight out of the taillight housing.

Step 8: Replace the turn signal bulb

  • 🔸Pull the old amber bulb straight out of the socket.
  • 🔸Install the new amber turn signal bulb by pressing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • 🔸Optionally, apply a small amount of dielectric grease on the contacts.

Step 9: Reinstall the turn signal socket

  • 🔸Insert the socket back into the housing, making sure the tabs line up.
  • 🔸Turn the socket clockwise by hand until it locks in place.
  • Do not use tools; hand-tight is enough for sockets.

Step 10: Refit trunk liners and covers

  • 🔸Push the side trunk liner back into its original position.
  • 🔸Reinstall any plastic clips using the trim removal tool or by pressing them back in by hand.
  • 🔸On the trunk lid, reinstall the inner covers you removed earlier and push the clips back into place.

Step 11: Test all rear lights

  • 🔸Turn the ignition to ON (or start the car) and have a helper stand behind the Accord.
  • 🔸With the car still in Park, press the brake pedal, turn on the headlights, and activate the left and right turn signals one at a time.
  • 🔸Shift temporarily into Reverse (foot firmly on brake, in a safe area) to confirm both reverse lights illuminate, then shift back to Park.
  • If a light doesn’t work, re-check that the bulb is fully seated and the socket is locked.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔸Confirm all rear lights work: running lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
  • 🔸Check for any dashboard warnings related to exterior lights.
  • 🔸Make sure all trunk liners and covers are secure and not rubbing on wiring.
  • 🔸Close the trunk and do a quick walk-around at night to verify brightness and aim look normal.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120–$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $25–$60 (parts only, for all four bulbs)

You Save: $60–$150 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5–1.0 hours.
