🔧 Forester - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll access each rear taillight from inside the cargo area, remove the taillight assembly, then swap the bulb in the socket. This is a simple job, but the plastic clips can break if you yank the lamp straight out.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ If bulbs were recently on, let the housings cool 5-10 minutes.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the taillight when it pops loose so it doesn’t scratch the paint.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension (1/4")
- Trim removal tool
- Torque wrench (in-lb)
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear stop/tail bulb (7443) - Qty: 2
- Rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber) - Qty: 2
- Reverse light bulb (921) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and open the rear hatch.
- Have a flashlight ready so you can identify the correct bulb socket.
- Quick check: press the brake pedal (have a helper) and use the turn signal to confirm which bulb you’re replacing.
- Question (so I can point you to the exact socket): are you replacing the brake/tail bulbs, the turn signal bulbs, or the reverse bulbs?
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the cargo-side access cover
- Open the hatch and move any cargo out of the way.
- Use a trim removal tool to pop off the small interior access cover behind the taillight (left side for driver lamp, right side for passenger lamp).
Step 2: Remove the taillight retaining nuts
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension (1/4") to remove the two 10mm nuts holding the taillight assembly.
- Set the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trim.
Step 3: Pull the taillight assembly outward
- With one hand supporting the lamp, pull the taillight straight rearward (toward you).
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while pulling—there are alignment pins that “pop” free.
- Pull straight back, not sideways.
Step 4: Remove the correct bulb socket
- Use a flashlight to locate the socket for the bulb you’re replacing.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it out.
- Term note: a “socket” is the plastic holder that locks into the taillight and holds the bulb.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves and pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
- If you have it, apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test the light
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock by hand.
- Before reinstalling the whole taillight, turn the ignition ON and test the light function you replaced.
- If it doesn’t light, turn ignition OFF and re-seat the bulb and socket.
Step 7: Reinstall the taillight assembly
- Line up the alignment pins with their holes, then push the taillight straight into place.
- Install the two nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension (1/4").
- Use a torque wrench (in-lb): Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall the access cover and repeat on the other side
- Snap the access cover back in using your hands (or a trim removal tool gently if needed).
- Repeat Steps 1-7 for the other taillight.
âś… After Repair
- Verify all rear lights: tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and hazards.
- Make sure both taillights sit flush with the body and gaps match the other side.
- If a bulb works intermittently, remove the socket and check for corrosion or a loose bulb fit.
