🔧 RX350 - Rear Tail Light Bulb Replacement (Left & Right)
On your RX350, the outer rear lamp assemblies can contain replaceable bulbs (commonly the rear turn signal and/or reverse), while some tail/brake functions may be LED and not bulb-serviceable. This guide shows how to access each rear lamp, remove the bulb socket, and replace the bulbs on both sides.
Assumption: Your outer rear lamps use replaceable wedge bulbs for at least one function (typically turn signal). If you find an LED module (no removable bulb), that function isn’t serviced as a bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle area.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; hot glass can burn you.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses when popping trim clips loose.
- Do not touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- Battery disconnect is not required, but it’s okay to disconnect the negative terminal if you want extra safety.

- Dielectric grease (small packet) - Qty: 1
- Rear lamp trim clips (as needed) - Qty: 2-6
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access and keep it fully supported.
- Lay a towel on the bumper edge to protect paint when the lamp comes free.
- A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps pop panels/clips without scratching.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear lamp fasteners (one side)
- Open the liftgate and move any cargo out of the way.
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently pop off the small access cover in the rear side trim near the tail lamp.
- If your RX350 has a small cargo net hook or retainer in the way, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver #2 (only if needed for access).
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" socket extension to remove the tail lamp mounting nuts behind the access opening.
- Hold the lamp with your free hand as the last nut comes off, so it doesn’t pop outward.
- Pull the lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins (do not yank sideways).
- Tip: Wiggle gently; pins can be snug.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket and bulb
- Find the bulb socket for the function you’re replacing (turn signal/reverse) on the back of the lamp.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it.
- Remove the bulb by pulling it straight out (wedge bulbs do not unscrew).
- If the bulb base is stuck, use a nitrile gloves grip and pull straight; don’t twist hard.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
- Reinstall the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
Step 5: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly
- Align the locating pins with the body holes and press the lamp straight into place.
- Start all nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Final tighten with a torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range) (specialty): Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back in until it snaps flush.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-5 for the opposite rear tail lamp.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, left/right turn signals, and reverse lights.
- If a turn signal “hyperflashes,” confirm you installed the correct bulb type and that it’s fully seated.
- Check that both tail lamps sit evenly with the body and that no trim clips are loose.
