🔧 Shock Absorbers - Rear Shock Replacement
Your Sierra uses rear shock absorbers to control bounce and keep the rear suspension stable over bumps. Replacing worn shocks restores ride control, helps tire wear, and improves braking stability. On your truck, this is a straightforward driveway job if you can safely lift and support the rear axle.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Support the truck with jack stands; never work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
- Keep the rear axle supported with a jack while removing the shock so the suspension does not drop suddenly.
- Use wheel chocks on the front tires.
- If your truck has a rusty shock bolt, use penetrating oil and let it soak first.
- No battery disconnect is required for rear shock replacement.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks at the front tires.
- Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting if you plan to remove the wheel.
- Spray the upper and lower shock bolts with penetrating oil if they look rusty.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the rear of the truck
- Use the floor jack to raise the rear axle enough to remove the wheel or reach the shock comfortably.
- Place jack stands under the frame and lower the truck onto them.
- Keep the rear axle lightly supported with the floor jack so it cannot drop suddenly.
Step 2: Remove the rear wheel
- Use the 21mm socket and breaker bar to remove the lug nuts.
- Set the wheel aside.
Step 3: Remove the lower shock bolt
- Use the 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the lower shock fastener.
- If the bolt is tight, hold the nut with the wrench and turn the bolt with the socket.
- Keep the axle supported.
Step 4: Remove the upper shock fastener
- Use the 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to remove the upper shock nut and hardware.
- Lower the shock out of the mount and remove it from the truck.
Step 5: Install the new shock absorber
- Position the new shock in the upper mount first, then align the lower eyelet.
- Use the 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to install the upper fastener finger-tight.
- Use the 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to install the lower fastener finger-tight.
- Do not fully tighten yet.
Step 6: Torque the shock fasteners
- Raise or lower the axle with the floor jack until the shock sits at normal ride height and is not twisted.
- Torque the upper shock fastener to 59 Nm (44 ft-lbs).
- Torque the lower shock fastener to 59 Nm (44 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall the wheel and lower the truck
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts with the 21mm socket.
- Lower the truck off the jack stands.
- Torque the lug nuts in a star pattern to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Test-drive at low speed first and listen for clunks or rattles.
- Check that the truck sits evenly and the shock mounts stay tight.
- Recheck the fasteners after a short drive.
