🔧 Shock Absorbers - Rear Shock Absorber Replacement

This covers the rear shock absorbers on your Tiguan. The rear shocks help control body motion and keep the tires planted over bumps. Replace them in pairs so the suspension stays balanced left to right.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the vehicle securely with jack stands before removing any wheel.
  • Do not work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Keep hands clear of the suspension when lowering or raising the arm.
  • Use eye protection; rust and road debris can fall when bolts come out.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

  • 18mm socket

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.

  • If the lower shock bolt is rusted, spray it with penetrating oil and let it soak.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and support the rear of the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to raise the rear of the Tiguan at the proper lift point.
  • Place jack stands under the rear support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Remove the rear wheel with the 17mm socket.

Step 2: Access the upper shock mount

  • Open the rear cargo area.
  • Remove the needed trim or access cover with a trim tool and flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Locate the upper shock mount fastener.

Step 3: Support the rear suspension arm

  • Place the floor jack under the rear suspension arm.
  • Raise it slightly to hold the arm in position.
  • Keep light pressure only.

Step 4: Remove the lower shock bolt

  • Use the 18mm socket and breaker bar to remove the lower shock bolt.
  • Hold the shock so it does not drop when the bolt comes free.

Step 5: Remove the upper shock fastener

  • Use the 18mm socket to remove the upper shock mount fastener.
  • Pull the shock absorber out of the wheel well.

Step 6: Install the new shock absorber

  • Position the new shock absorber in place.
  • Install the upper fastener by hand first, using the 18mm socket.
  • Install the lower bolt by hand before tightening anything fully.

Step 7: Tighten the shock fasteners

  • Use the torque wrench and 18mm socket to tighten the lower shock bolt.
  • Torque to manufacturer specification for the rear lower shock bolt.
  • Tighten the upper shock mount fastener with the torque wrench.
  • Torque to manufacturer specification for the upper shock mount fastener.
  • Tighten with the suspension at normal ride height if possible.

Step 8: Reassemble and repeat on the other side

  • Reinstall the wheel and snug the bolts with the 17mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle and torque the wheel bolts with the torque wrench.
  • Torque to manufacturer specification for the wheel bolts.
  • Repeat the full repair on the opposite side.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive slowly at first and listen for clunks or rattles.
  • Check that the rear of the Tiguan sits evenly.
  • Inspect both shocks after a short test drive for looseness or leaks.
  • Recheck wheel bolt torque after the first drive.
