🔧 Grand Cherokee - Shock Absorber Replacement
This repair covers replacing the rear shock absorbers on your Grand Cherokee. The front suspension uses complete strut assemblies, while the rear uses separate shock absorbers, so “shock absorber replacement” usually refers to the rear shocks.
Difficulty Level: Beginner to Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a flat, solid surface and never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Support your Grand Cherokee with jack stands before going underneath.
- ⚠️ Replace rear shock absorbers in pairs so the suspension feels even side to side.
- ⚠️ Do not remove suspension control arm bolts for this job.
- ⚠️ Keep hands clear of the shock mounts while lowering or raising the axle.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground.
- Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks in front of the front tires.
- Spray penetrating oil on the upper and lower rear shock bolts and let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
- A breaker bar is a long-handled ratchet used to loosen tight bolts with more leverage.
- A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct tightness so they are secure without being over-tightened.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel lug nut about half a turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen wheels before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Rear of the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack under the rear differential area to lift the rear of your Grand Cherokee.
- Place jack stands under the rear frame or approved rear support points.
- Slowly lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Keep the floor jack lightly supporting the rear axle so it does not drop when the shocks are removed.
Step 3: Remove the Rear Wheels
- Use the 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both rear wheels and set them flat on the ground.
Step 4: Support the Rear Axle
- Use the floor jack under the rear axle tube near the shock you are replacing.
- Lift just enough to take tension off the shock absorber.
- The shock absorber limits suspension movement, so the axle needs light support before removal.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Shock Bolt
- Use an 18mm socket with the 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lower shock bolt.
- Use an 18mm wrench to hold the nut if the nut spins.
- Remove the bolt and nut with the 18mm socket and 18mm wrench.
- If the bolt is stuck, tap it gently with a rubber mallet.
Step 6: Remove the Upper Shock Bolts
- Use a 15mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper shock mounting bolts.
- Use a 15mm wrench if needed to hold the fastener steady.
- Support the shock with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
- Remove the shock absorber from the vehicle.
Step 7: Compare the New Shock to the Old Shock
- Place the old and new shock absorbers side by side.
- Check that the length, mounting ends, and bushings match.
- If the new shock has a shipping strap, do not cut it until you are ready to install it.
- A bushing is the rubber cushion in the shock mount that reduces noise and vibration.
Step 8: Install the New Upper Shock Mount
- Position the new shock absorber into the upper mount by hand.
- Start the upper bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 15mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the upper bolts.
- Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 15mm socket to tighten the upper shock bolts to Torque to 75 Nm (55 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Align and Install the Lower Shock Bolt
- Use the floor jack to raise or lower the rear axle slightly until the lower shock eye lines up with the mounting hole.
- Insert the lower shock bolt by hand.
- Install the nut by hand.
- Use the 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to snug the lower bolt.
- Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench, 18mm socket, and 18mm wrench to tighten the lower shock bolt to Torque to 115 Nm (85 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same steps and tools to replace the shock absorber on the opposite side.
- Keep the floor jack lightly supporting the axle while each shock is disconnected.
- Always replace shocks in pairs.
Step 11: Reinstall the Rear Wheels
- Lift each rear wheel onto the hub by hand.
- Start all lug nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 12: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to raise the rear slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Grand Cherokee until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).
- Remove the wheel chocks after the vehicle is fully lowered.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Bounce the rear of your Grand Cherokee lightly by hand and listen for clunks.
- ✅ Test drive slowly at first over a smooth road, then over small bumps.
- ✅ Recheck that there are no loose bolts or unusual noises.
- ✅ Recheck rear wheel lug nut torque after 25-50 miles: Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).
- ✅ An alignment is not normally required for rear shock absorber replacement unless other suspension parts were disturbed.
