🔧 Shock Absorbers - Replacement
Assumption: This guide covers the rear shock absorbers on your F-150. The front dampers are serviced through the front suspension and use a different procedure.
The rear shocks control bounce, body roll, and tire contact. If one is leaking, damaged, or the truck rides overly bouncy, replacing them in pairs is the best fix.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Support the truck securely with jack stands before removing any shock bolts.
- Keep hands clear when the axle is lowered or raised; the suspension can move suddenly.
- Do not work under a truck supported only by a floor jack.
- If a shock is bent, leaking badly, or seized, expect extra force during removal.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Ratchet
- 15mm socket
- 18mm socket
- 21mm socket
- Torque wrench
- Breaker bar
- Penetrating oil
- Safety glasses
- Mechanic gloves

- Lower shock mounting hardware - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Chock the front wheels.
- Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts slightly if you plan to remove the wheels for more room.
- Spray the upper and lower shock bolts with penetrating oil and let it soak for a few minutes.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and support the rear of the truck
- Use the floor jack to lift the rear axle.
- Place jack stands under the frame rails and lower the truck onto them.
- Keep the rear axle lightly supported with the jack so you can raise or lower it as needed.
Step 2: Remove the wheel, if needed
- Use the 21mm socket and ratchet to remove the rear wheel for better access.
- This is not always required, but it gives more room to work.
Step 3: Remove the lower shock bolt
- Use the 18mm socket and breaker bar to remove the lower shock bolt.
- If the bolt is tight, raise or lower the axle slightly with the floor jack to relieve pressure on the shock.
- Torque on reassembly: 90 Nm (66 ft-lbs)
Step 4: Remove the upper shock nut
- Use the 15mm socket to remove the upper mounting nut.
- Hold the shock steady by hand as the last threads come out.
- Torque on reassembly: 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs)
Step 5: Remove the shock absorber
- Pull the old shock out of the wheel well.
- If it sticks, lower or raise the axle slightly to change the angle.
- Match the new shock length before installation.
Step 6: Install the new shock absorber
- Position the new shock in place by hand.
- Start the upper nut first using the 15mm socket, but do not fully tighten it yet.
- Align the lower mount and install the lower bolt with the 18mm socket.
Step 7: Tighten the shock hardware
- Use the torque wrench to tighten the upper nut to 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs).
- Use the torque wrench to tighten the lower bolt to 90 Nm (66 ft-lbs).
- Repeat the same steps on the other side so both shocks match.
Step 8: Reinstall the wheel and lower the truck
- If removed, reinstall the wheel using the 21mm socket.
- Lower the truck off the jack stands with the floor jack.
- Torque the wheel lug nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Drive slowly at first and listen for clunks or rattles.
- Check that the truck sits level and the rear end feels stable.
- Recheck the shock hardware after a short road test.
- If the ride still feels loose, inspect the rear springs, bushings, and sway bar links.
