🔧 Shock Absorbers - Replacement

Assumption: This guide covers the rear shock absorbers on your F-150. The front suspension uses strut-style assemblies, so the front procedure is different.

Rear shocks control bounce and keep the truck stable over bumps. Replacing them restores ride quality and handling if you notice leaking, clunking, or excessive bouncing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the truck with jack stands before removing any suspension hardware.
  • Keep hands clear of the suspension while the axle is supported.
  • Do not rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Use eye protection when working under the truck.
  • No battery disconnect is required for rear shock replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for truck weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Ratchet
  • 15mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • 15mm wrench
  • 18mm wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Penetrating oil
  • Breaker bar

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear shock absorbers - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Upper shock bolts/nuts - Qty: 2
  • Lower shock bolts/nuts - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the front wheels.
  • If the bolts are rusty, spray them with penetrating oil and let it soak.
  • Lift the rear of the truck by the frame so the axle can move slightly.
  • Support the frame with jack stands before starting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and support the rear

  • Use the floor jack to raise the rear of the truck by the frame.
  • Place jack stands under the frame rails.
  • Lower the truck onto the stands and make sure it is stable.
  • Leave the rear axle supported lightly by the jack if needed to control suspension movement.

Step 2: Remove the lower shock bolt

  • Use a 15mm socket and ratchet to remove the lower shock fastener.
  • If the nut spins, hold the back side with a 15mm wrench.
  • Penetrating oil helps on rusty bolts.

Step 3: Remove the upper shock bolt

  • Use an 18mm socket and ratchet to remove the upper shock fastener.
  • Use an 18mm wrench on the opposite side if needed.
  • Lower or raise the axle slightly with the jack to reduce tension on the shock.

Step 4: Remove the shock absorber

  • Pull the shock absorber out of the mounting points.
  • If it is stuck, gently move the axle with the jack until it slides free.

Step 5: Install the new shock absorber

  • Position the new shock absorber in place.
  • Start the upper bolt by hand first, then the lower bolt.
  • Do not fully tighten either bolt until both are threaded in correctly.

Step 6: Torque the fasteners

  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the upper and lower shock fasteners.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs) for the shock absorber mounting bolts.
  • Double-check both sides are torqued evenly.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the shock absorber on the opposite side using the same steps.
  • Replace shocks in pairs for even handling.

✅ After Repair

  • Lower the truck and remove the wheel chocks.
  • Road test over a smooth route first, then over small bumps.
  • Listen for clunks and recheck the shock bolts after the test drive.
  • If ride height or handling feels odd, inspect the mounting bushings and bolts again.
