🔧 Tacoma - Rear Quarter Window Latch Replacement

Your Tacoma Extended Cab does not use rear power window regulators like a Double Cab rear door. The rear side windows are pop-out quarter windows, so the usual repair is replacing the rear quarter window latch assemblies that hold the glass closed and let it vent open.

Assumption: This covers the rear side pop-out window latch assemblies on your Tacoma.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes per side

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses because you will be working near glass and interior trim clips.
  • ⚠️ Support the rear quarter glass with one hand when removing the latch so it does not swing or drop suddenly.
  • ⚠️ Do not pry directly against the glass edge. It can chip or crack.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required because this repair is mechanical, not electrical.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Torque wrench inch-pound
  • Painter's tape
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear quarter window latch assembly - Qty: 1 per side
  • Rear quarter window latch screws or bolts - Qty: as needed
  • Interior trim clips - Qty: as needed

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tacoma on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the front door on the side you are repairing so you have room to work.
  • Place painter's tape around nearby trim edges to help prevent scratches.
  • A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool used to release interior panels without damaging them.
  • An inch-pound torque wrench is a small torque wrench used for light fasteners so you do not overtighten plastic or glass-mounted parts.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Inspect the Rear Quarter Window

  • Use your hands to gently open and close the rear pop-out window.
  • Check whether the latch is loose, cracked, stuck, or not pulling the glass tightly against the seal.
  • If the glass moves but will not stay closed, the latch assembly is usually the failed part.
  • Work slowly near glass.

Step 2: Remove the Small Interior Trim Cover

  • Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently pry off the small cover around the rear quarter window latch area, if equipped.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to lift a screw cap.
  • Do not use metal tools directly on visible trim unless protected with painter's tape.

Step 3: Support the Glass

  • Use one hand to hold the rear quarter glass in the mostly closed position.
  • If you have a helper, have them hold the glass from the outside.
  • The latch is the part controlling the glass position, so the glass may swing loose when the latch is removed.

Step 4: Remove the Latch Fasteners

  • Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the latch screws if your Tacoma uses Phillips fasteners.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet if your latch uses 10mm bolts.
  • Keep the fasteners in order so they go back into the same locations.
  • If the fasteners are tight, press firmly while turning to avoid stripping the head.

Step 5: Remove the Old Latch Assembly

  • Use your hand to pull the latch assembly away from the mounting point.
  • If it sticks to the trim or glass bracket, gently wiggle it free by hand.
  • Use the plastic trim removal tool only if light prying is needed.
  • Do not force the latch against the glass.

Step 6: Compare the New and Old Latch

  • Place the new rear quarter window latch assembly next to the old one.
  • Confirm the shape, mounting holes, handle direction, and pivot points match.
  • Make sure you are installing the correct side, because left and right latch assemblies may not interchange.

Step 7: Install the New Latch Assembly

  • Use your hand to position the new latch assembly on the original mounting points.
  • Start all screws or bolts by hand first so they do not cross-thread.
  • Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket to snug the fasteners evenly.
  • Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs) unless the replacement latch instructions specify otherwise.
  • Snug, not crushed.

Step 8: Test Window Operation Before Reinstalling Trim

  • Use your hand to open and close the pop-out window several times.
  • Make sure the latch locks fully and pulls the glass tight against the weatherstrip.
  • If the glass does not sit flat, loosen the fasteners slightly with the Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket, realign the latch, and retighten.

Step 9: Reinstall the Interior Trim Cover

  • Use your hands to align the trim cover.
  • Press it into place until the clips snap in.
  • If screws were removed, reinstall them with the Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Remove the painter's tape after the trim is secure.

Step 10: Repeat on the Other Side if Needed

  • Use the same tools and steps for the opposite rear quarter window.
  • Replace in pairs if both latches are loose, brittle, or difficult to lock.

✅ After Repair

  • Close both rear quarter windows and check that the glass sits evenly against the rubber seal.
  • Drive at low speed first and listen for wind noise from the repaired window.
  • Spray water lightly around the window area and check inside for leaks.
  • If you hear wind noise, realign the latch slightly tighter against the seal.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$280 per side (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $25-$90 per side (parts only)

You Save: $95-$190 per side by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hour per side.
