🔧 Grand Cherokee - Rear Turn Signal Lamp Replacement
On your Summit, the rear turn signals are built-in LED modules inside the tail light, not simple plug-in bulbs. When one fails, Jeep’s repair procedure is to replace the entire rear lamp assembly on that side.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour per side
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working near the lights.
- 🧤 The rear lamp edges and body panels can be sharp—wear gloves to avoid cuts.
- 🔌 Disconnecting the battery is not required, but avoid pulling on wiring; always handle connectors by the plastic housings.
- 🚗 Work on level ground with the parking brake engaged so the vehicle cannot move.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🧰 Ratchet handle 1/4"

- 🧰 Torx T20 screwdriver
- 🧰 Plastic trim removal tool set
- 🧰 Small flathead screwdriver 3mm

- 🔩 Rear outer combination lamp assembly (right side, LED) - Qty: 1 (only if right turn signal is bad)
- 🔩 Rear lamp mounting nuts/clips - Qty: 2 per side (optional, replace if damaged or corroded)
- 🔩 Dielectric grease - Qty: small tube (for electrical connector pins)
- 🔩 Masking tape - Qty: 1 roll (to protect paint edges)
📋 Before You Begin
- 🔧 Park the Grand Cherokee on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch off all exterior lights.
- 🔧 Open the liftgate fully to access the rear lamp mounting area at the sides.
- 🔧 Place a strip of masking tape along the body panel edges around the tail light to help prevent paint scratches.
- 🔧 Keep a clean microfiber towel nearby to rest the lamp on without scratching it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate to expose the vertical edge of the tail lamp on the body side.
- Locate the two plastic screw-type fasteners or covers along the inside edge of the lamp (visible when the liftgate is open).
- Use the Torx T20 screwdriver or small flathead screwdriver 3mm (depending on your fastener style) to carefully unscrew or pry the center of each fastener.
- Remove the fasteners and set them aside in a safe spot. Keep fasteners in a small tray
Step 2: Free the tail lamp from the body
- The lamp is now only held by alignment pins that push into metal clips in the body.
- Place one hand on the outer side of the lamp and the other near the inner edge.
- Gently pull the lamp straight rearward away from the vehicle. Do not pry sideways.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool at the gap between the lamp and body, and twist gently while pulling straight back.
- Work slowly so the alignment pins do not snap. Wiggle gently; avoid sudden force
Step 3: Disconnect the wiring connector
- Once the lamp is free, support it with one hand and do not let it hang by the wiring.
- Locate the main electrical connector on the back of the lamp.
- Press the locking tab on the connector using your thumb or the small flathead screwdriver 3mm to lift the tab gently.
- While holding the tab, pull the connector straight off the lamp with your hand—do not pull on the wires.
- Set the old lamp aside on the clean microfiber towel.
Step 4: Prepare the new lamp assembly
- Unbox the new rear combination lamp and compare it to the old one.
- Make sure mounting pins, connector location, and shape all match.
- Apply a very light smear of dielectric grease to the connector pins on the car side. This helps prevent corrosion and makes future removal easier.
Step 5: Connect the new lamp and test the turn signal
- Plug the vehicle’s connector into the new lamp until it clicks into place.
- Have a helper sit in the driver’s seat.
- With the lamp still loose but supported by your hand, ask your helper to turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off) and operate the turn signal for that side.
- Confirm that the new rear turn signal LED flashes normally and at normal speed.
- Switch off the ignition before proceeding.
Step 6: Reinstall the lamp into the body
- Align the lamp’s guide pins with the holes in the body.
- Make sure the lamp sits evenly against the body line before pushing.
- With one firm, even push using both hands, press the lamp straight forward into the body until it snaps fully into place.
- Check that the gaps around the lamp are even and the lamp is flush with the body.
Step 7: Reinstall the mounting fasteners
- Reinstall the two screw-type fasteners or covers on the inner edge of the lamp.
- Use the Torx T20 screwdriver or small flathead screwdriver 3mm to snug them down.
- These are light-duty fasteners; do not overtighten or strip them. Stop once gently snug
- Torque spec (if using metal screws): Torque to 3–4 Nm (2–3 ft-lbs) with the 8mm socket and ratchet handle 1/4" if your vehicle has metal screws instead of plastic fasteners.
Step 8: Repeat for the other side if needed
- If only one side failed, you can replace just that side.
- If you prefer matching brightness and color perfectly, repeat the same steps for the opposite side with the correct-side lamp assembly.
✅ After Repair
- 🔄 Turn the ignition ON and test:
- Left and right turn signals
- Hazard lights
- Brake lights and tail lights (just to confirm all is well)
- 👀 Walk around the rear of the vehicle and check that both lamps sit evenly and there are no gaps.
- 🧽 Remove any masking tape and wipe fingerprints off the lamp lenses with the clean microfiber towel.
- 🚗 Take a short drive and have someone follow you or park near a window/wall at night to confirm visibility.
