🔧 Tundra - Rear Window Regulator Replacement

The rear window regulator is the mechanism that lifts and lowers the rear door glass. Replacement usually means removing the rear door panel, securing the glass, swapping the regulator (often with the motor), then reassembling and testing for smooth operation.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours (per rear door)

Assumption: your Tundra has power rear windows; steps cover regulator-with-motor style.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the regulator arms/cables; they can pinch hard.
  • ⚠️ Support the glass with tape before loosening clamps so it can’t drop.
  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before unplugging door wiring.
  • ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery: use a 10mm wrench and remove the negative terminal first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Trim removal tool set
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or low-range ft-lb)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Painter’s tape (2" wide)
  • Magnetic pickup tool
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear door window regulator assembly (left or right, as needed) - Qty: 1
  • Rear door window motor - Qty: 1 (only if not included with regulator)
  • Door panel retainer clips - Qty: 6-10 (recommended)
  • Butyl door vapor barrier adhesive - Qty: 1 (if the sealant won’t restick)
  • Silicone spray (dry lube) for window run channels - Qty: 1 (optional)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and put the transmission in Park.
  • Lower the rear window about halfway if it still moves (this usually exposes the glass clamp bolts).
  • Have painter’s tape (2" wide) ready to hold the glass up.
  • If your window is stuck up and won’t move, that’s OK—you’ll access the glass clamps through the door openings.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear door switch/trim and door panel

  • Use a trim removal tool set to gently pry up the window switch bezel (the small trim around the switch).
  • Unplug the switch connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight out. A “connector tab” is a small lock you press.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 to remove any visible screws in the armrest/handle area.
  • Use the trim removal tool set to pop the door panel clips free around the edges.
  • Lift the door panel straight up to unhook it from the top window ledge, then set it aside.

Step 2: Peel back the vapor barrier (water shield)

  • Use your hands and a trim removal tool set to slowly peel back the plastic vapor barrier.
  • Try not to tear it. If the sticky butyl gets messy, use work gloves.
  • Support it out of the way so you can access the large door openings.

Step 3: Secure the glass

  • If the glass is down partway, manually slide it fully up.
  • Apply multiple strips of painter’s tape (2" wide) from the outside of the glass over the door frame to hold the glass up.
  • Use 3–5 strips; don’t trust one strip.

Step 4: Disconnect the window motor and locate the glass clamp bolts

  • Use a flashlight to find the regulator/motor wiring inside the door.
  • Unplug the motor connector by pressing the tab, then pulling it free.
  • Through the access holes, locate the two glass clamp bolts/nuts that attach the glass to the regulator.

Step 5: Separate the glass from the regulator

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" extension to loosen/remove the glass clamp bolts.
  • Keep one hand ready under the glass edge (inside the door) while removing bolts, even with tape in place.
  • Once free, confirm the glass is stable and fully supported by the tape.

Step 6: Remove the regulator (and motor if attached)

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" extension to remove the regulator mounting bolts.
  • Support the regulator as you remove the last bolt so it doesn’t drop inside the door.
  • Maneuver the regulator out through the large access opening.
  • If bolts drop inside the door, use a magnetic pickup tool to retrieve them.

Step 7: Transfer the motor (only if your new regulator doesn’t include it)

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the motor mounting bolts from the old regulator.
  • Move the motor to the new regulator and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) for motor bolts.

Step 8: Install the new regulator assembly

  • Slide the new regulator into the door and align it with the mounting holes.
  • Install bolts finger-tight first using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) for regulator mounting bolts.
  • Plug in the motor connector until it clicks.

Step 9: Reattach the glass to the regulator

  • Carefully lower the glass into the regulator clamps (remove some tape as needed, but keep at least 1-2 strips holding it).
  • Install the glass clamp bolts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) for glass clamp bolts.
  • Remove all remaining painter’s tape (2" wide).

Step 10: Quick function test before reassembly

  • Plug the window switch back in temporarily.
  • Turn ignition ON and run the window fully down and fully up.
  • Listen for clicking/grinding and watch for tilting or binding.
  • If it’s slow or squeaks, lightly apply silicone spray (dry lube) for window run channels to the vertical felt channels and cycle the window again.

Step 11: Reinstall the vapor barrier and door panel

  • Press the vapor barrier back into the sticky butyl. If it won’t seal, use butyl door vapor barrier adhesive.
  • Hang the door panel on the top ledge first, then press clips in around the edges.
  • Reinstall screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Snap the switch bezel back in place using your hands (no hammering).

âś… After Repair

  • Cycle the rear window 5-10 times and confirm it moves smoothly and seals at the top.
  • Confirm the door opens/closes normally and the panel is fully clipped (no rattles).
  • Check that the vapor barrier is sealed—this helps prevent water leaks into the cabin.
