🔧 Suburban - Rear Window Regulator Replacement

The rear window regulator is the track-and-cable (or scissor) assembly that moves the glass up and down. Replacing it means removing the rear door trim panel, separating the glass from the regulator, swapping the regulator (and motor if included), then reassembling and testing.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours (per door)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep hands clear of the regulator when powered; it can pinch hard.
  • ⚠️ Support the window glass with tape so it can’t drop and shatter.
  • ⚠️ Key OFF and remove the key while disconnecting door wiring.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses; door panel clips can pop loose suddenly.
  • ⚠️ If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm wrench and isolate the negative cable so it can’t spring back.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Trim removal tool set
  • Pick tool
  • 7mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension
  • Torx T30 bit
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Masking tape (2" wide)
  • Magnetic pickup tool
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear window regulator - Qty: 1
  • Rear window regulator motor - Qty: 1 (only if not included with regulator)
  • Rear door trim panel clips - Qty: 1 set (recommended)
  • Water shield butyl adhesive - Qty: 1 (if the vapor barrier won’t reseal)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Lower the rear window to about halfway if it still moves; this usually exposes the glass-to-regulator fasteners in the access holes.
  • Have masking tape ready to hold the glass to the door frame.
  • Take photos of connectors before unplugging.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear door switch/trim pieces

  • Use a trim removal tool set to pry up the rear door window switch bezel.
  • Unplug the switch connector using a pick tool to lift the locking tab (a locking tab is a small clip that prevents the plug from backing out).

Step 2: Remove rear door panel screws

  • Remove the screw(s) behind the interior door handle using a 7mm socket or Phillips screwdriver #2 (varies by handle trim).
  • Remove the screws at the bottom and/or front edge of the door panel using a 7mm socket.
  • If equipped, remove any larger handle/armrest fastener using a Torx T30 bit.

Step 3: Release the door panel clips and lift the panel off

  • Slide a trim removal tool set under the lower edge of the panel and pop the clips free one at a time.
  • Lift the panel straight up to unhook it from the window sill.
  • Disconnect any remaining connectors (courtesy light/speaker) using a pick tool as needed.

Step 4: Peel back the water shield (vapor barrier)

  • Use a flathead screwdriver (small) and your hands to carefully peel the water shield back.
  • Try to keep the butyl adhesive clean so it can reseal.

Step 5: Secure the window glass

  • If the glass is still attached and you can move it by hand, position the glass near the top.
  • Apply multiple strips of masking tape (2" wide) from the outside of the glass over the door frame and back to the inside to hold it up.
  • Use 3-5 long strips for safety.

Step 6: Separate the glass from the regulator

  • Look through the door access holes to find the glass-to-regulator clamp/bolts.
  • Loosen/remove the fasteners using a 10mm socket.
  • Once free, gently slide the glass fully up by hand and retape it securely.
  • On reassembly: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) for the glass clamp bolts.

Step 7: Unplug the window motor and remove the regulator

  • Unplug the motor connector using a pick tool.
  • Remove the regulator/motor mounting bolts using a 10mm socket with a 3" extension and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Support the regulator as you remove the last bolt so it doesn’t drop inside the door.
  • Work the regulator assembly out through the largest access opening.
  • On reassembly: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) for regulator/motor mounting bolts.

Step 8: Swap the motor (if needed)

  • If your replacement regulator did not include a motor, remove the motor fasteners using a 10mm socket or Torx T30 bit (varies by brand/regulator style).
  • Install the motor onto the new regulator and tighten evenly.
  • On reassembly: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 9: Install the new regulator

  • Feed the new regulator into the door and line up the bolt holes.
  • Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten with a 10mm socket, then finish with a torque wrench (inch-pound): Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Plug in the motor connector until it clicks.

Step 10: Reattach the glass to the regulator

  • Carefully remove some tape and lower the glass by hand until it sits in the regulator clamps.
  • Install/tighten the clamp bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench (inch-pound): Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 11: Function test before reassembly

  • Reconnect the window switch temporarily.
  • Turn the key ON and run the window fully down and fully up.
  • Listen for popping/cable snapping noises and watch for glass tilting; if it tilts, loosen the clamp bolts and reseat the glass.
  • Turn key OFF and unplug the switch again.

Step 12: Reinstall the water shield and door panel

  • Press the vapor barrier back into the butyl adhesive by hand; add water shield butyl adhesive if it won’t stick.
  • Reconnect all door electrical connectors.
  • Hang the door panel on the window sill lip, then push clips in by hand around the perimeter.
  • Reinstall screws using a 7mm socket, Phillips screwdriver #2, and/or Torx T30 bit as removed.
  • Snap the window switch bezel back in using your hands.

✅ After Repair

  • Cycle the rear window up/down 5-10 times to confirm smooth movement.
  • Check that the glass seals evenly at the top (no wind gap).
  • Confirm the door lock, speaker, and courtesy light work (if equipped).
  • Remove any remaining tape and clean adhesive residue.
